BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell University President J. Bradley Creed has announced the appointment of Sal Mercogliano, associate professor of history, as Campbell's NCAA faculty athletics representative.
In his role as faculty athletics representative, Mercogliano will represent Campbell in its relations with the NCAA and the Big South Conference. In addition, he will provide campus leadership on athletically-related issues and serve as a liaison between the Department of Athletics and the University's governance system.
"We are pleased to appoint Sal to this important position," said Dr. Creed. "In addition to having the respect of his colleagues, Sal has an excellent rapport with our student-athletes and coaches and understands our commitment to the scholar-athlete model."
A full-time member of the Campbell faculty since 2010, Mercogliano has assisted with search committees for the women's lacrosse head coach and volunteered his time to assist with the team. The former lacrosse student-athlete the State University of New York Maritime College has served as color commentator for Campbell lacrosse broadcasts on the Big South Network for four years and was the analyst for the 2016 Big South Women's Lacrosse Championship broadcast on ESPN3.
In addition, Mercogliano traveled with the men's basketball team on its August 2015 trip to Europe, where he provided background and historical insight.
"I am excited to assume the role of FAR and look forward to working with the students, coaches, and staff in continuing the tradition at Campbell of good relations and communications between academics and athletics," said Mercogliano. "Having worked at many institutions over my career, Campbell is unique in having a bridge, and not a barrier, between these two sides of the campus.
Mercogliano obtained his master's degree in maritime history and nautical archaeology from East Carolina University and a Ph.D. in military and naval history from the University of Alabama. During his teaching career, he has had the experience of assisting with several college teams. While at Methodist University, Mercogliano assisted with the start-up of the women's lacrosse team and at the United States Military Academy at West Point, he was the assistant coach for the men's novice crew team.
At Campbell, he was named the Professor of the Year by the Student Government Association in 2012 and 2015, awarded the D. P. Russ, Jr., and Walter S. Jones, Sr., Alumni Award for Teaching Excellence in 2013, the College of Arts and Science Dean Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2015 and in 2016 named the Fan of the Year by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
Prior to his academic career, he worked in the U.S. Merchant Marine and the Department of Defense. He is a captain in the Northwest Harnett Volunteer Fire Department. He also is the faculty advisor for the Kappa Alpha fraternity. In 2015, Mercogliano was co-chair of the successful Big South Undergraduate Research Symposium (BigSURS), which was hosted by Campbell University.
Mercogliano and his wife, Kathy, a 2001 Campbell Law graduate, live in northern Harnett County with their son, Christopher.
