Baseball travels to Liberty for first place showdown
BUIES CREEK - The Campbell University baseball squad (25-5, 5-1 Big South) will travel to Lynchburg, Va. this weekend for an important Big South Conference series with the Liberty Flames (25-7, 5-1 Big South). The two clubs have not met since Campbell left the Big South in 1994, and the matchup features two teams currently tied with High Point atop the league standings at 5-1.
The Fighting Camels have a 12-10 lead in the overall series with Liberty. The teams last met at Liberty during the 1994 season, with the Flames winning two of three games during the regular season series. This weekend's games will be available on local television in the Lynchburg, Va. area as well as online at ESPN3 (broadcast coverage).
Michael Felton has led a dynamic Camel offense this season, as the junior second baseman leads the nation in base hits. Jimmy Brenneman ranks in the top-10 in runs scored throughout the country, while the Fighting Camels carried the second-best team batting average in the national rankings into this week.
CU starter Matt Sergey saw a 17-plus inning scoreless streak snapped in the ninth inning of his last start against Charleston Southern, but the senior right-hander leads the Big South with 49 strikeouts. Sergey carries a 2.83 season ERA into this weekend, teaming with Frank Zier's 2.45 ERA mark as two of the best among league starters.
Friday's series opener is set for 6 p.m. at Liberty's Worthington Stadium. The doubleheader on Saturday is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. Live stats will be available in addition to the video coverage for all three contests (Live Stats).
