Felton, Kirkland, Sergey and Olson earn all-conference honors, Holskey named to all-academic team
High Point, N.C. – Michael Felton (Tempe, Ariz.), Jake Kirkland (Pauline, S.C.) and Matt Sergey (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) were named to the all-conference first-team, and David Olson (Auburn, Wash.) received second-team honors it was announced at the conference awards ceremony Monday evening at High Point University. In addition, Josh Holskey (Roanoke, Va.) was named to the Big South's all-academic team.
Felton was named the top second baseman in the league and led the Big South Conference in batting average (.431), on base percentage (.477), base hits (100) and total bases (121). His 100 base hits have tied a Big South single season record and Felton already holds the Campbell program record after passing Ellis Lowe's previous record of 92 hits. He was named the league's Player of the Week on May 14 after pounding out 15 hits in five games for that week. Felton had 35 multiple hit games in the regular season, including two four-hit games to lead the Camels to a series sweep over Radford.
Kirkland was selected as the first-team designated hitter honoree and led the league in RBI (54), was third in slugging percentage (.561) total bases (120) and doubles (18) and fourth in at bats (214) and batting average (.360). The junior had 22 multiple hit games and 12 multiple RBI games while reaching base in all but one game during the regular season. Kirkland was 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored in a conference win over UNC Asheville on April 14. He had season high marks of four RBI in a March 31 victory over Charleston Southern and three days later against ACC foe Duke.
Sergey received a first-team selection as a starting pitcher after finishing the regular season 7-0 with a 3.25 ERA. He helped Campbell open Big South play by tossing a complete game shutout at Winthrop on March 23 to give CU its first victory back in the league in which the school was a charter member. Sergey had a 17-inning scoreless streak and had a season-high ten strikeouts in a win over Longwood earlier in the season. He is fifth in the league in strikeouts (73) and sixth in innings pitched (88.2) while being tied for first with 14 starts. Opponents are hitting .239 against Sergey, the sixth lowest mark among Big South pitchers.
Olson received second-team recognition at third base after he replaced an injured Kyle Holmstrom during the opening Big South Conference series of the year. Olson's .356 batting average was the fifth-best among league leaders, as was his 44 RBI. His 72 hits are the sixth most on the Big South charts and he also posted top-10 finishes in slugging percentage and on base percentage. Olson recorded the game-winning RBI hit in Campbell's win over nationally-ranked NC State. He was 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored in a league game at Coastal Carolina on May 5.
Holskey was named to the all-academic team after graduating with a 3.92 GPA. Holskey was a Kinesiology major and a three-time CoSIDA Academic all-district selection for the Camels. He has batted .286 this season in 18 games with five doubles and one home run. After missing a month of the season with a wrist injury, Holskey returned with a pinch hit single at Lipscomb on April 28.
Campbell will open the Big South tournament on Tuesday evening, facing host High Point at approximately 8 p.m.
