BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After splitting a pair of midweek contests, No. 25 Campbell returns to Big South play this weekend, hosting Longwood Friday and Saturday at Jim Perry Stadium. Friday's 5 p.m. game will be broadcast live on ESPN 3. Saturday's 1 p.m. doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.
The Camels are 29-6 overall on the season and 9-3 in Big South games, winning six-straight decisions before Wednesday's loss. Campbell has posted four winning streaks of five or more games this season, including nine consecutive from Feb. 19 to March 2.
Clayton Brown owns a .459 average to lead the Camels, while Brent Graham and Ben McQuown post .391 and .368 clips. McQuown, who set the Campbell single-season stolen bases record with his 36th and 37th on Tuesday, enters the weekend as the nation's leader in the category. The senior also adds 46 runs scored, 22 RBI and four home runs.
Michael Felton adds a .328 average with 36 RBI, while Elijah Trail leads the Camels with 37 RBI and six homers. David Olson hits .351 with a pair of round trippers and Michael DeLucia posts a .333 clip at the plate.
On the mound, senior ace Ryan Mattes paces a CU staff that owns a 3.02 team ERA. The righthander from Virginia Beach, Va. is 6-1 with a 2.36 ERA, while sophomore Heath Bowers is 6-0 with a 1.89 ERA. Hector Cedano adds a 6-2 mark to go along with a 3.83 ERA, while Ryan Thompson is 3-0 with six saves and a 1.17 ERA.
Big South newcomer Longwood heads to Buies Creek at 16-18 overall and 6-6 in conference play after Tuesday's extra inning loss at Virginia Tech and a 2-1 series win at High Point last weekend. The Lancers have won 5-of-7 heading into the weekend.
Alex Owens leads the Lancers with a .309 average, 24 RBI and four home runs, while Scott Burkett hits .288 with 15 RBI and 19 runs scored. Brandon Delk adds four home runs and 21 RBI while hitting .218. Brandon Vick leads the LU pitching staff with a 3-3 record and a 3.61 ERA. Aaron Myers, meanwhile, is 2-0 with six saves and a 3.79 ERA.
Campbell and Longwood have split the all-time series 5-5, and will meet for the first time as conference foes over the weekend.
The Camels will head to North Carolina Central on Tuesday before taking on Appalachian State Wednesday in Thomasville, N.C. Campbell returns to Big South play over the weekend, hosting VMI (April 19-20).
