Game Notes | @Camel_Baseball

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After breaking for exams, No. 29 Campbell returns to Big South play this weekend at High Point. The three game set will kick off Friday at 6 p.m. from HPU's Williard Stadium, continuing Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Camels swept a pair of midweek contests in their last outing, downing North Carolina Central 10-0 and UNC Greensboro 10-7. It was the fourth time this season CU has posted 10 or more runs in back to back games, and first since March 17 and 19 when the Camels defeated Gardner-Webb 11-10 on the road and Rider 14-6 at Jim Perry Stadium.

Campbell won its fifth and sixth games in a row with its victories over NCCU and UNCG and pushed its record against in-state competition to 14-3 this season.

Matt Marksberry struck out a career-best 13 for the Camels in a combined one-hit shutout of NCCU Tuesday night, allowing just one hit in seven shutout innings. He faced the minimum through 3 2/3, when an error extended the inning, and walked five in the game. His 13 strikeouts were one shy of the school record.

Blake Boyce's pinch hit grand slam in the bottom of the eighth then lifted Campbell over visiting UNCG 10-7 on Wednesday.

Boyce, a senior from Virginia Beach, Va., pinch hit after the Spartans intentionally walked Michael DeLucia to load the bases with one out in the eighth. On a 1-0 pitch, Boyce belted the round tripper to left off of UNCG's Dylan Hathcock, the first home run of the senior's career, to put the Camels ahead 10-7.

Boyce also came up with a bottom of the ninth RBI double last Friday in the VMI series opener, lifting the Camels to a 2-1 win.

Clayton Brown owns a team-high .427 average, while Brent Graham adds a .399 clip to go along with 44 runs and 35 RBI. David Olson also bats .358 while Michael Felton hits .353 with 41 RBI. Ben McQuown adds a .331 average with 53 runs scored and 43 stolen bases.

Sophomore righty Heath Bowers is a perfect 7-0 on the mound this season with a 1.86 ERA, while Hector Cedano is 8-2 with a 3.28 ERA and Ryan Thompson is 5-0 with a 0.91 ERA. Ryan Mattes and Matt Marksberry are both 6-2 on the year.

HPU is 22-22 overall and 9-6 in Big South play after 5-4 and 4-2 losses to Duke last week. The Panthers were winners of four straight before the back to back losses to the Blue Devils, sweeping UNC Asheville on the road.

Ryan Retz paces HPU with a .363 average, 32 RBI and four home runs, while Spencer Angelis hits .338 with 23 runs scored and 21 RBI. Josh Spano has also knocked in 27 to go along with a .311 average.

On the mound, Retz is also 4-3 with a 2.91 ERA, while Jacob Newberry is 2-2 with a 3.02 ERA. Malcolm Clapsaddle is 1-3 with four saves and a 3.79 ERA in 13 appearances.

The Camels will head to the College of Charleston for their final midweek test, taking on the Cougars on Tuesday, May 7. Campbell then returns home for its final six regular season contests, beginning with Liberty on May 10.
