Campbell baseball collegiate summer league update: June 21

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Summer collegiate baseball leagues are in full swing across the country, and seven Camels are in action.

Four Camels are suiting up in the Coastal Plain League, including Heath Bowers (Gastonia Grizzlies), Matt Nadolski (Forest City Owls), Coley Thompkins (Wilmington Sharks) and Elijah Trail (Petersburg Generals).

Austin Beard is with the Morganton Aggies of the Southern Collegiate Baseball League, while Ryan Koopman is with the Dayton Docs of the Great Lakes League and Aaron Vogt plays for the Jersey Pilots in the American Collegiate.

Austin Beard (Morganton Aggies | Southern Collegiate Baseball League)
Beard, playing this summer for the Morganton Aggies of the Southern Collegiate Baseball League, is hitting .375 in four games, going 3-for-8 with a run scored, two walks and a stolen base. The Aggies currently lead the SCBL's North Division at 5-2.

Beard hit .211 as a sophomore for Campbell in 2013, playing in 19 games. The rising junior drove in two and scored three times, recording two doubles in the spring.

Heath Bowers (Gastonia Grizzlies | Coastal Plain League)
Bowers is 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA for the Grizzlies in two starts, striking out 15 in 10 innings with only three walks. Gastonia is 7-12 overall on the season.

Bowers was an All-Big South Second Team honoree as a sophomore in 2013, posting a 9-0 record and a 1.69 ERA. In 15 appearances (14 starts), Bowers fanned 80 in 90 1/3 innings.

Ryan Koopman (Dayton Docs | Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League)
Koopman has fashioned a 1.80 ERA with a save in five innings in a team-high five appearances for Dayton, striking out six. The Docs are 7-5 in the GLSCL, ranking third in the league standings.

As a junior in 2013, Koopman pitched in seven games for the Camels, holding a 3.12 ERA, striking out eight in 8 2/3 innings.

Matt Nadolski (Forrest City Owls | Coastal Plain League)
Nadolski is sixth in the CPL in batting among regulars, hitting .354 with eight RBI, nine runs scored, three doubles, a home run and three stolen bases in 13 games with 12 starts. The Petaluma, Calif. native is also 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA in four appearances on the mound, pitching 4 2/3 innings with three strikeouts.

Nadolski appeared in three games for CU as a junior in 2013, hitting .250 with three RBI and three runs scored.

Coley Thompkins (Wilmington Sharks | Coastal Plain League)
Thompkins has fashioned a 3.00 ERA in two relief appearances, pitching three innings. A Wilmington, N.C. native, Thompkins has allowed a run on four hits while striking out two and walking three for the Sharks. Wilmington is 10-8 on the year.

Thompkins pitched in 13 games for the Camels as a sophomore, posting a 1-0 record with a 1.62 ERA. He pitched 16 2/3 innings with 10 punchouts.

Elijah Trail (Petersburg Generals | Coastal Plain League)
A First Team All-Big South performer for Campbell in 2013, Trail has driven in four runs with a double and a run scored, hitting .106. Petersburg is 3-16 this season.

Trail was one of nine Camels to earn All-Big South honors in 2013, hitting .260 with 51 RBI, 39 runs scored and seven home runs. The Bakersfield, Calif. native led CU with 21 extra base hits.

Aaron Vogt (Jersey Pilots | Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League)
Vogt has hit .125 with a run, a walk and two stolen bases in seven games. Jersey is 2-9 this summer.

Vogt hit .125 (4-for-32) for Campbell, playing in 46 games with five starts. He drove in six and scored five times, notching a triple.
