BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After winning 90 games over the last two seasons at Campbell, four Camels are playing affiliated professional baseball this summer.

Matt Marksberry | LHP | Danville Braves (Atlanta Braves)
The Atlanta Braves 15th round pick in the 2013 MLB Draft picked up his first professional win last night (July 10) in a relief appearance for Danville, a 7-1 Braves win over Kingsport. Marksberry is now 1-1 with a 4.70 ERA in four appearances for Danville, adding eight strikeouts in 7.2 innings pitched.

The Batavia, Ohio native went 8-2 on the mound in 2013 for the Camels with a 4.90 ERA, striking out 73 in 68 innings of work. The lefthander's eight wins is tied for sixth in single-season school history, and his 9.7 strikeouts per nine clip in 2013 stands second all-time.

Ben McQuown | OF | AZL Athletics (Oakland Athletics)
McQuown is batting .333 for the AZL Athletics in 11 games, registering three doubles and a triple to go along with eight runs scored and five RBI. He adds two stolen bases for the A's. The Waianae, Hawaii native was picked in the 30th round of the 2013 MLB Draft by Oakland.

McQuown, who was named All-American by both Baseball America and the NCBWA in 2013, as well as First Team All-Big South, led all of NCAA Division I with 54 stolen bases for the Camels, also batting .329 with 65 runs scored, 30 RBI and four home runs.

Ryan Mattes | RHP | Burlington Royals (Kansas City Royals)
In three appearances with the Burlington Royals, Mattes owns a 1.80 ERA with no record, pitching 5.0 innings nine strikeouts and no walks. He has allowed just one earned run, holding opponents to a .118 batting average. He signed a free agent contract with the Royals in June.

Mattes was named First Team All-Big South as a starting pitcher in 2013, setting school records for walks per nine innings (1.5) and the lowest 100-plus inning ERA in Campbell history with a 1.94 clip, ranking third overall in school history. He finished 2013 8-3 in 106.2 innings over 16 starts with 76 strikeouts, two complete games and 12 quality starts, earning Big South Pitcher of the Week honors on Feb. 18.

Jake Smith | RHP | Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (San Francisco Giants)
Smith is 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA in seven relief appearances for Salem-Keizer. The righthander has struck out 17 in 11.2 innings, holding opposing batters to a slim .105 average. Smith was a 48th round pick by San Francisco in the 2011 MLB Draft.

Smith played one season for the Camels, owning a 2-3 record with a 7.44 ERA in 21 appearances with five starts. He added two saves, while striking out 39 in 52.0 innings in 2011.

The Camels finished 2013 49-10, winning the Big South's North Division Championship and runner-up in the league's championship game. A school record nine Camels were named All-Big South, including Ryan Thompson as the conference's Pitcher of the Year, and Greg Goff as the Coach of the Year.

Four Camels have racked up All-America accolades this season, led by McQuown (Baseball America, NCBWA) and Thompson (Louisville Slugger, ABCA), with two each. Brent Graham (College Sports Madness) and David Olson (CoSIDA Academic All-America) also earned national honors.

A record three Camels were named to the ABCA's Atlantic All-Region team last week, including Thompson and Michael Felton, who was named All-American as a junior in 2012, earning First Team accolades. Heath Bowers also picked up a Second Team nod.
