STATESBORO, GA. – Nine Eagles combined for 14 hits to lift Georgia Southern over visiting Campbell 8-2 Tuesday night at J.I. Clements Stadium.
GSU moved to 6-6 with the win while Campbell dipped to 5-6 on the season in its 2017 road debut.
All nine GSU starters in the lineup picked up a hit on the night. Jordan Wren drove in a pair of runs, going 2-for-3 with a walk, singling in runs in the first and the fifth. Ryan Cleveland knocked in three in the win, going 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in the sixth, also pushing a run home in the first on a RBI groundout.
Steven Curry and C.J. Brazil also owned two-hit nights with RBI for the Eagles.
Seth Shuman (2-0) earned the win, tossing five innings with two runs on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Adam Kelly worked two scoreless frames, striking out and walking one.
Zach Strickland and Lawson Humphries also combined for two scoreless innings.
Campbell starter Erik Dowse (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits in two innings. Alex Yarem worked four innings in relief, surrendering four runs on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
Phil Stokes tossed two scoreless frames, striking out two.
Solo home runs by Matthew Barefoot and Christian Jones in the fourth and fifth put Campbell on the board. Barefoot's homer cut the Georgia Southern lead to 4-1 before the Eagles answered with a score in the bottom of the inning.
The home runs were the second of the season for both, and Barefoot's second-straight game with a round-tripper.
The midweek series continues Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Campbell returns to Jim Perry Stadium for a three game weekend series against Evansville, March 10-12.
