Baseball hosts Rider in midweek series

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell returns home, hosting Rider in a two-game midweek series Tuesday and Wednesday, March 14-15 at Jim Perry Stadium.

First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. for both games.

Campbell heads into the week at 6-9 overall after dropping 2-of-3 to Evansville in Buies Creek last weekend.

Redshirt freshman Matthew Barefoot, the Big South's Freshman of the Week, extended his hit streak to eight games, batting .450 for the week with eight RBI and four extra-base hits. The Dunn, N.C. native bats .439 with 13 RBI, 11 runs and 12 extra-base hits for the season.

Jeff Hahs also hits .361 while Drew Butler is batting .345 with 17 stolen bases and 18 runs scored. Christian Jones and Cole Hallum match Barefoot's team-high 13 RBI.

Tyson Messer has been the Camels' top arm, going 2-0 with a 2.65 ERA in four appearances, including one start. The sophomore right-hander owns 20 strikeouts in 17 innings, holding opponents to a .093 batting average.

Rider comes into the series at 5-6 on the season after taking a series, two games to one, at Georgia. Lee Lipinski bats a team-high .400 for the Broncs, while Harrison McClure owns seven RBI with 10 runs scored, batting .278. Nick Margevicius is 2-0 on the mound with a 2.84 ERA.

The Camels and the Broncs will be meeting for the third time in the last four seasons, with Campbell holding a 7-1 advantage in the all-time series after the teams split last season. Rider took game one 11-8 before CU claimed the finale 12-3 in 2016.

Campbell begins an eight-game road swing this weekend, heading to the Spider Invitational. The Camels will take on Michigan State at 10 a.m. in the tournament opener Friday, March 17, then Cornell at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Campbell will square off with a host Richmond on Sunday at 2 p.m.
