Baseball tops Rider 7-5 Tuesday

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Tyson Messer pitched four scoreless and Matthew Barefoot drove in four to lead Campbell over Rider 7-5 Tuesday at Jim Perry Stadium.

Campbell improved to 7-9 on the season, while Rider dipped to 5-7.

Tyson Messer (3-0) earned the win, going four scoreless innings with four hits, four strikeouts and a walk in his second start of the season. Wes Noble followed with three more scoreless frames, allowing two hits with two punchouts and a walk.

Barefoot was 1-for-3 on the day, clearing the bags with a two out, bases loaded double to highlight a five-run second for the Camels, also drawing a bases loaded walk in the sixth.

Campbell led 7-0 before a late push by the Broncs. A one out bases loaded walk put Rider on the board in the eighth. Jake Bender followed with a two run single, cutting the Campbell lead to 7-3.

In the ninth, Riley Mihalik started a two out rally with a single up the middle. Lee Lipinski followed with a two-run homer to left to make it 7-5 before a groundout ended the game.

John Yocum (0-2) took the loss for Rider, allowing seven runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and six walks in 5 2/3 innings. Jordan Silverman and Nick Payesko combined for 2 1/3 shutout innings out of the bullpen.

Drew Butler tied a Campbell single-game record with four walks, scoring twice in the win. Kevin Barron was 3-for-4 with a two-run double in the second, also scoring twice.

Lipinski was 1-for-3 for Rider, while Mihalik went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

The teams will square off again Wednesday with a 4:30 p.m. start.

 

Campbell begins an eight-game road swing this weekend, heading to the Spider Invitational. The Camels will take on Michigan State at 10 a.m. in the tournament opener Friday, March 17, then Cornell at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Campbell will square off with a host Richmond on Sunday at 2 p.m.
