BUIES CREEK, N.C. – For the second time this season, Campbell's Matthew Barefoot has been named Big South Come Ready Nutrition Freshman of the Week.
Barefoot led Campbell to a 3-1 week that included a Big South series win, as well as a midweek victory at North Carolina State. Barefoot hit .438 (7-for-16) with eight RBI, adding five runs scored with two home runs and two doubles.
At NC State, Barefoot went 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs, posting two doubles and a home run in the 9-8 Campbell win, becoming the first Camel with three extra-base hits in a game since Ellis Lowe against Norfolk State in 2010.
Barefoot notched another three-hit game in Friday's Big South opener at Gardner-Webb, going 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run in an 8-6 CU win, including the go-ahead RBI in the win, a two out, two-run single. Barefoot also drove in a pair of runs in a ninth inning rally in game one of Saturday's doubleheader with a two-run homer. Campbell's rally came up just short, falling 10-9. In the nightcap, Barefoot walked twice and picked up a sacrifice fly in Campbell's four-run fourth inning, helping the Camels win the Big South series.
The redshirt freshman owns a hit in 15 of his last 18 games, hitting .409 with 25 RBI and 19 runs scored. Barefoot also owns team-bests with 12 doubles and five home runs.
The Big South weekly honor is the third this season for Barefoot. He was also named BSC Freshman of the Week on March 13. He was also named Big South Player of the Week on March 6.
The Camels wrap up an eight-game road swing on Tuesday, March 28, at Virginia Tech before returning to Jim Perry Stadium for three games against Big South foe Charleston Southern, March 31-April 2.
