Camels host Bucs in Big South home debut

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell returns from an eight-game road swing, hosting Charleston Southern in a three-game Big South series, March 31-April 2 at Jim Perry Stadium.

The series kicks off Friday at 6 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. start Saturday and concluding with a 2 p.m. first pitch Sunday.

On Friday, Campbell will give away free long-sleeved "Camels" t-shirts to the first 200 students in attendance. Kids can also run the bases following Sunday's game.

The Camels (12-13, 2-1 Big South) come into their Big South home debut after wins in five of their last six outings, including midweek victories at North Carolina State and at Virginia Tech. CU also claimed its opening Big South series at Gardner-Webb.

Matthew Barefoot, who collected his second Big South Freshman of the Week honor on Monday, leads the Camels at the plate with a .424 average, 30 RBI and 19 extra-base hits, including seven home runs. Jeff Hahs also bats .356 with 23 RBI and 21 runs scored, while Cole Hallum hits .299 with 23 RBI.

Drew Butler owns 22 stolen bases, chipping in a .303 batting average and a .466 on-base percentage, while Zach Minnick, hitting .522 (12-for-23) over his last six games, owns a .333 average for the season.

On the mound, Tyson Messer is 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 24 innings over eight appearances. Harry Thomas is 1-1 with a 3.77 ERA in nine outings, while Ryan Kirk is 3-2.

Charleston Southern is 13-10 overall and 2-4 in Big South games, splitting a pair of midweek outings with USC Upstate (L 10-4) and Savannah State (W 7-5). The Buccaneers have dropped their first two Big South series to Longwood and Liberty two games to one.

Jason Miller bats .333 with 13 RBI and seven doubles, while Nate Blanchard owns 15 RBI and two home runs, hitting .298. Nik Constantakos adds a 1-1 record with a 3.56 ERA in six starts, striking out 30 with just 10 walks in 30 1/3 innings.

The Camels will head to longtime rival UNCW on April 4, jumping back into Big South play on the road at High Point April 7-9.
