BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Zack Ridgely and Kyle Zurak combined on a two-hitter and Radford defeated Campbell 2-0 Thursday night at Jim Perry Stadium.
Ridgely (4-5) allowed only a pair of third-inning singles while tossing eight innings before Zurak struck out the side in the ninth to earn his fourth save.
The Highlanders (14-19, 4-6 Big South) scored single runs in the second and fifth innings and dealt the Camels (16-18, 5-5) just their second shutout of the year.
Campbell, which entered the game averaging 9.2 runs, only once advanced a runner past first base while dropping its third-straight.
In the top of the second, Matt Roth singled with one out, stole second, and scored on Anthony Miano's two-out hit up the middle for what proved to be the only run Ridgely needed.
Campbell's best threat came in the third when Drew Butler and Matthew Barefoot singled with two out. However, Luke Wise hauled in Jeff Hahs' drive on the warning track in center field to end the threat.
Radford added its other run on Richard De la Cruz' RBI hit in the fifth, but the Camels avoided further damage when Hahs threw out Clayton Baine at the plate from right field for the third out.
Cole Hallum drew a leadoff walk in the Campbell seventh, but was stranded. Ridgely retired the final six batters he faced. The junior left-hander threw only 81 pitches; struck out four and walked two.
The three-game series continues Friday (3:00 p.m.) and concludes Saturday (2:00 p.m.).
