BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Jonathan Gonzalez drove in three to lead Radford over Campbell 7-4 Saturday in the Big South series finale at Jim Perry Stadium.
The Highlanders (16-19, 6-6 Big South) handed Campbell (16-20, 5-7 Big South) its first series sweep of the season, also claiming game one 2-0 and game two 8-5.
Gonzalez went 1-for-5, putting the Highlanders up 2-0 in the first with his seventh home run of the season. He gave RU an insurance run in the ninth with a RBI fielder's choice, also scoring two runs in the win.
Austin Gerber (3-1) earned the win in relief, going 4 1/3 innings with a run on a hits, two strikeouts and a walk. RU starter Ryan Sande surrendered two runs on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk in 3 2/3. Mack Krupp closed it out, allowing a run on a hit with a walk in the ninth.
Ryan Kirk (3-4) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits with a walk in 1/3 of an inning. Tyson Messer came on in relief, allowing two runs on two hits with three strikeouts and three walks in 3 2/3.
After the Gonzalez two run homer in the top of the first, Matthew Barefoot put Campbell on the board in the third inning with a RBI single. The teams traded runs in the fourth, with Anthony Miano scoring on a wild pitch for the Highlanders, and Kyle Mehl doubling in a run for Campbell before RU answered back with a run in the fifth on a Spencer Horwitz sacrifice fly, making the score 4-2.
Miano again scored on a two out wild pitch in the eighth, pushing the Radford lead to 5-2.
In the bottom of the eighth, a leadoff home run from Jeff Hahs, his eighth of the season, brought Campbell within 5-3, but a two run rally from Radford in the ninth made it 7-3 Highlanders. Campbell put two on with two out in the ninth, scoring one on a Drew Butler RBI single, but Radford held on for the 7-4 win.
Kyle Butler and Danny Hrbek bother went 2-for-5 in the win, while Miano was 2-for-3.
Drew Butler led the Camels, going 2-for-5 with a RBI.
Campbell will head to North Carolina Central on Tuesday, April 18, before returning to Jim Perry Stadium for a three game Big South series against UNC Asheville, April 21-23.
