BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell rallied for five in the bottom of the ninth, including a game-ending grand slam from Drew Butler, to top UNC Asheville 9-7 Saturday at Jim Perry Stadium.
The Campbell (18-21, 6-8 Big South) win evened the Big South series with Asheville (16-23, 6-8), who took Friday's opener 10-5.
The Camels trailed 7-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Ben Calvano led off with a single to left, and with one out, Jimmy Monaghan walked and Kevin Barron was hit by a pitch to load the bases for CU.
Matthew Barefoot worked a bases loaded walk to push one run home before Butler sent a 2-1 pitch over the wall in left to win it for the Camels.
Wes Noble (2-2) picked up the win for CU in relief, going five innings with three runs, one earned, on three hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Campbell starter Alex Yarem went four innings, allowing four runs, three earned, with two strikeouts and a walk.
Justin Woods (3-2), one of four Asheville pitchers to see action in the ninth, was charged with the loss, allowing two runs with a walk. Spencer Orr allowed four runs on four hits with three strikeouts and three walks in the start, going 3 1/3.
Entering the ninth without a hit, Butler was 1-for-5 with four RBI, clubbing his second career home run. Calvano went 2-for-4 with three RBI, lifting his second home run in three games, a three run shot in a four run Campbell fourth.
Jeff Hahs also went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
Danny Wilson was 2-for-5 with two runs and Tanner Bush was 2-for-4 with a run for the Bulldogs.
The series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m. Originally scheduled for 2 p.m., the start time was pushed up to avoid inclement weather.
The Camels will host UNCW on Tuesday, April 25 before heading to North Carolina on Wednesday, April 26.
