Baseball returns to Big South play at Liberty

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell jumps back into Big South play this weekend, traveling to Liberty May 5-7. The series begins Friday at 6 p.m. Saturday will also feature a 6 p.m. first pitch, while Sunday's finale is set for 2 p.m. in Lynchburg, Va.

The Camels are 20-23 overall and 6-9 in Big South games, coming off a 7-2 Tuesday night win over Virginia Tech at Jim Perry Stadium.

Matthew Barefoot owns a team-high .358 average with 39 RBI on 27 extra-base hits, including a Big South leading 20 doubles. Jeff Hahs bats .333 with 37 RBI and eight home runs, while Cole Hallum hits .279 with a team-high 42 RBI, adding eight homers.

Drew Butler, the nation's leader in stolen bases with 33, tacks on a .294 average with 43 runs scored for the Camels.

On the mound, Wes Noble is 3-2 with a 3.43 ERA, while Alex Yarem is 2-0 with a 3.64 ERA for the Camels.

The Flames come into the weekend at 26-16 overall and 12-6 in Big South play, falling 8-7 at No. 10 Virginia on Tuesday after sweeping Longwood.

D.J. Artis leads Liberty with a .370 average, adding 45 runs and 36 RBI, while Sammy Taormina hits .327 with 51 RBI and 10 home runs. Jake Barbee has also driven in 37 while batting .300. Evan Mitchell is also 5-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 11 appearances.

Campbell is 20-19 all-time against the Flames, with LU holding a 7-8 edge in the series since the Camels rejoined the Big South in 2012.

The Camels head to Duke (Tuesday, May 9) and North Carolina Central (Wednesday, May 10) next week. CU has one home series remaining, wrapping up the regular season May 18-20 against Longwood.
