Camels make home debut Saturday night vs. UVa.-Wise

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell will take on UVa.-Wise Saturday night at 6 p.m. in its home opener at the new look Barker-Lane Stadium.

The home of the Camels has been overhauled in the offseason to include a new press box tower and grandstand, increasing the stadium's permanent seating to over 5,000, adding a presidential suite level and press level.

CU opened the Mike Minter era and the 2013 season with a 52-7 loss at future Conference USA member UNC Charlotte on Aug. 31. The game was the first under Minter, the former Carolina Panthers and Nebraska standout, who was named head coach of the Camels in November.

Campbell gathered 287 total yards, including 186 on the ground, led by freshman running back Keith Goss' 56 on 10 carries. Senior Kurt Odom added 45 on seven tries, while Dakota Wolf netted 26 yards with a touchdown on the ground, adding 68 passing on 10-of-14. Brian Hudson added 30 yards rushing and 33 passing on 6-of-12 attempts.

Jabri Ridenhour caught a team-best five passes for 44 yards for the Camels.

Luke Hill paced the CU defense with six tackles, while Brandon Stegall tacked on five tackles, including one for loss, with two breakups. Lucas Smith and Matt Farris also posted five stops apiece, combining for three tackles for loss.

Saturday's game will be the season opener for UVa.-Wise, who begin their first year in the NCAA Division II ranks in 2013 after 22 years as a NAIA member.

Among the Cavaliers leading returners is wide receiver Terrance Younger, who was named Mid-South East Freshman of the Year in 2012 after catching 24 passes for 516 yards and a touchdown. Senior defensive tackle Walter Mickey also returns after earning all-conference honors last season, posting 55 tackles and 2.5 sacks.

The game will be the third in the series' history, with the Camels holding the 2-0 advantage. CU earned its second shutout of its modern era (since 2008) with its 10-0 win over Wise last season. The Camels also won 20-16 in 2010 on the road.

Single game tickets are still available for Campbell's home opener against the Cavaliers, as well as each of the team's six home games this season.

Next up for the Camels will be a home date with Charleston Southern on Sept. 14. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. at Barker-Lane Stadium and Ed Gore Field.
