BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell opens its Pioneer Football League slate Saturday at Valparaiso, taking on the Crusaders at 2 p.m. (EST) at Brown Field.
The Camels are 1-2 overall on the season after splitting a pair of nonconference home games before the bye on Sept. 21. Valpo, 0-3 in the early going, is also coming off a bye week, falling to William Jewell 36-34 on Sept. 14.
Campbell owns the nation's seventh-best rushing attack, netting 282.7 yards per game. Senior quarterback Brian Hudson leads the way with 210 yards on the ground this season, adding 241 passing and two touchdowns. Freshman running back Keith Goss adds 142 yards rushing and a score, while A.J. Artis owns 98 yards receiving on 10 catches with a touchdown.
On the defensive side, redshirt junior linebacker Matt Farris leads the way with 24 tackles, including 1.5 for loss with an interception. Jaylan Adlam and Taurean Lynch tack on 19 and 17 stops, while Lucas Smith, Brandon Stegall and Andrew Yost have recorded 14 apiece.
The Crusaders have dropped their last two games by a combined five points since opening the season with a 69-10 setback at North Dakota. Valpo is led by Jake Hutson's 215 rushing and 73 receiving yards, scoring once on the ground. Eric Hoffman adds 827 yards passing with seven touchdowns. Fred Gladney tacks on 17 catches for 324 yards and three touchdowns.
Alex Green leads the Valpo defense with 34 tackles, making 25 solo and one for loss. Alex Grask has posted 19 tackles with an interception and a blocked kick.
Valparaiso leads the all-time series with the Camels 3-2, taking each of the last two outings, including last season's 41-21 contest in Buies Creek and 2011's 34-31 game at Brown Field. Campbell is 1-1 on the road against the Crusaders.
Campbell is also seeking to begin PFL play with a win for the first time, currently standing at 0-5 since 2008.
The Camels return home on Oct. 5, hosting Morehead State in a 1 p.m. kickoff.
