CHARLESTON, S.C. – Michael Buchanan led four USC Upstate players in double figures with 17 points and 14 rebounds and the Spartans defeated Campbell 80-73 in overtime Friday on the first day of the Holy City Hoops Classic at McAlister Field House.

Campbell (3-4) clawed back late in regulation to take a 72-70 lead on Andrew Eudy's back-door layup off Shane Whitfield's pass with 17 seconds to play.  However, Mike Cunningham answered at the other end with a pull-up jumper with 13 seconds left to tie the score.

Chris Clemons' deep three at the buzzer hit the front iron and bounded off to send the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, neither team made a shot from the field, but Upstate (4-4) hit 8-of-11 free throws to earn the victory.

Clemons led Campbell with 26 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists.  Whitfield added 12 points, while Andrew Eudy and Kyre' Hamer chipped in nine apiece.

Upstate finished the game with a 45-42 advantage on the glass and had a 15-10 edge in second-chance points.  The Spartans shot 43 percent from the field, made 8-of-28 threes (.286) and 20-of-34 (.588) from the line.

Campbell shot 36.9 percent (24-65) from the field, hit 7-of-25 threes (.280) and 18-of-25 (.720) from the stripe.

Campbell used an early 11-2 run to take the lead and went ahead 15-8 on Whitfield's bucket with 12:11 remaining.  The Spartans, however, countered with a 20-8 burst and took their largest lead of the half (32-26) when Josh Cuthbertson knocked down a three-pointer from the left wing with 1:39 left in the period.

Drives by Kyre' Hamer and Whitfield trimmed Campbell's deficit to 32-30 at the break.  Campbell shot just 38.5 percent (10-26) from the field in the opening half and made only 2-of-10 threes, but hit 8-of-9 from the stripe.

Upstate hit 12-of-27 (.444) shots in the first period, 3-of-11 threes, but only 5-of-9 from the stripe.  Whitfield scored 10 first-half points and Clemons nine for the Camels, while Whittington had 12 on 5-of-7 shooting before intermission.
