ROCK HILL, S.C. – Keon Johnson scored a career-high 39 points and Winthrop defeated Campbell 76-62 Saturday at the Winthrop Coliseum.
Johnson hit 14-of-20 shots, including 5-of-9 threes, and made all 6 of his free throws to eclipse his previous high of 38 he scored in an overtime win Nov. 21 at Illinois.
Xavier Cooks added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Big South co-leader Winthrop (18-5, 10-2), which has won 9 of last 10 games.
Chris Clemons led Campbell (11-13, 4-8) with 24 points on 8-of-17 shooting. Moga Lado added 10 points on 5-of-5 from the field off the bench.
A 10-0 run late in the game gave Winthrop a double figure lead it did not lose. Clemons knocked down a three with 6:50 to play that cut the Eagle lead to 60-54.
However, the Camels went the next 4:28 without scoring until Shane Whitfield's 3-point play cut the margin to 70-57 with 2:22 remaining.
Winthrop closed the opening half on a 10-2 run and led 32-24 at the break. Johnson scored all 15 of his first-half points in the last 8:05 of the period and the Eagles made 8 of their final nine shots in the stanza.
Whitfield's free throws closed a 9-1 Camel rally and brought the Camels within 39-38 with 15:27 left in the game, but CU could get no closer.
Winthrop made 52 percent of its shots (26-50), 6-of-17 threes, and 18-of-21 (.857) from the line while finishing with a 34-27 advantage on the boards. Campbell shot 38.9 percent (21-54) on the day, made 5-of-16 triples and 15-of-19 from the stripe.
Now with 1109 points in 54 games, Clemons has moved into 22nd place on Campbell's all-time scoring list (11th in the Division I era, since 1977-78) past Corey Best (1099 from 1994-98) and Brad Childress (1105 from 1986-90).
The Camels return home Thursday to host Longwood in a 7:00 p.m. start.
