BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Chris Clemons scored 26 points and Campbell defeated UT Martin 73-56 in the second round of the CollegeInsider.com post-season tournament Monday at Gore Arena.
Campbell, which knocked down 13 three-pointers against the Ohio Valley Conference runner-up, will play this weekend in the CIT quarterfinals. Pairings, sites, dates and times will be announced Tuesday.
Jacolby Mobley led UT Martin (22-13) with 27 points, 19 in the second half, on 9-of-23 shooting. Chandler Rowe, Kahari Beaufort and Malik Pugh added 8 apiece for the Skyhawks, who shot just 33.9 percent for the game.
The nation's third-leading scorer at 25.3 points per game, Clemons made 10-of-17 shots, including 3-of-7 triples, pulled down six rebounds, dealt three assists and made four steals. He ignited a 21-4 first-half Camel run that gave CU the lead for good with a driving layup then a drive and kick to Gensler for a corner three.
Oliver knocked down a trio of three-pointers in the flurry and his left corner trey with 6:34 to play in the period put the Camels in front 30-15.
Campbell led 37-19 at the break, thanks in part to 8-of-16 shooting beyond the arc. Back-to-back treys by Clemons and Burk pushed the margin to 24 (45-21) with 17:37 remaining.
After Clemons' triple left CU in front 48-25 with 14:25 to go, Mobley nearly engineered a UTM comeback. He had 19 points in a stretch when the Skyhawks outscored the Camels 26-11 and capped the burst with an old-fashioned 3-point play that brought UTM within 59-51 with 6:28 to go.
However, Andrew Eudy, who had four blocks, hit an elbow jumper to start a final 14-2 push as UTM missed eight-straight shots and committed four turnovers until Malik Pugh's triple with 14 seconds to play accounted for the game's final points.
Campbell finished the night 26-of-59 from the field (.441), hit 13-of-31 threes, and 8-of-10 from the line, while committing just eight turnovers. UTM, which eliminated Big South regular season co-champ UNC Asheville last week while hitting 13-of-22 triples, made only 8-of-27 (.296) from long distance Monday night and 10-of-17 (.588) from the stripe.
The Camels finished with a 41-36 advantage on the boards against a taller UTM team that entered the game ranked 22nd in the nation in offensive rebounds. CU finished with a 24-16 edge on points in the paint and 15-12 in second-chance points.
