ERIE, COLO. – Craig Hornberger of Campbell University shot a one-over-par 73 in his collegiate debut and is tied for third place on the individual leader board after Monday's opening round of the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational.
A freshman from Lancaster, Pa., Hornberger made four birdies to finish the opening 18 holes and in a tie for third place at one-over on the par-72, 7741-yard Colorado National Golf Club layout. The 54-hole tournament continues with Monday afternoon's second round.
Only one player – Preston Stanley of Houston Baptist – scored in red numbers (one-under-par 71) in the 84-golfer field over the first 18 holes. Kyle Westmoreland of Air Force shot even-par 72 to sit in second place.
Despite winds blowing between 15 and 25 miles per hour, Hornberger played the front nine one-over and the back side even in Monday's first round. Senior Amanjyot Singh was tied for 27th after a plus-five 77.
Campbell shot plus-27 (315) as a team and sits in 13th place in the 16-school field heading into the second round. Host Colorado shot 299 in the opening round and held a 2-stroke lead over Houston Baptist.
