LAREDO, TEXAS – With three golfers among the top 11 individuals, Campbell won team honors Saturday at the Border Olympics.
Jesper Svensson tied for second, Brett McLamb tied for sixth and Max Theodorakis tied for 11th for Campbell, which was 11-under par for the day and finished five strokes ahead of host and 52nd-ranked Houston.
The Camels amassed a two-day total of 559 strokes (17-under) following and opening round 282 with a 277 Saturday in the event that was shortened to 36 holes due to thunderstorms Friday afternoon.
Svensson and McLamb and Theodorakis all set collegiate best finishes as the Camels won their second tournament of 2016-17 and claimed the team's sixth top-five performance in eight outings. The victory was the 50th for the Campbell men's golf team under the direction of 27th-year head coach John Crooks, who has now amassed 130 career tournament coaching wins combined between the Campbell men and women.
Svensson (70-66—136) finished one stroke behind individual medalist Mike Colgate of Nebraska (66-69—135). The 2016 Big South Conference freshman of the year, Svensson tied for the event lead with 11 birdies, while finishing third in par-4 scoring (-4) and tied for sixth on the par-3 holes (-1). He played a bogey-free final round on the par-72, 7125-yard Laredo Country Club layout, finishing each since 3-under.
Svensson's final round 66 and runner-up finish bettered his previous career performances at the 2016 Big South Conference Championship, where he shot a 67 and finished fourth.
Campbell's two freshmen in the lineup, McLamb and Theodorakis, finished a combined eight under par over 36 holes. A native of nearby Coats, N.C., McLamb was 3-over after his first 3 holes Saturday, but reeled off six birdies, plus an eagle on the 570-yard, par-five 13th hole. He tied for sixth at five-under 139 (73-66), surpassing his previous best collegiate finish by 34 places. McLamb tied for fourth in the field in par-4 scoring (-3) and tied for eighth with nine birdies.
Theodorakis tied for 11th at 3-under 141 (68-73) after a final round that included four birdies. A native of Danbury, Conn., Theodorakis tied for seventh in the field in par-4 scoring (-2) and tied for eighth with nine birdies.
