BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After leading Campbell to its second tournament championship of the season, Jesper Svensson was named Big South Conference men's golfer of the week and Brett McLamb received freshman of the week honors.
Svensson tied for second individually to lead Campbell, which was 11-under par for Saturday's final round and finished five strokes ahead of host and 52nd-ranked Houston, to its second team title of the season at the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas.
The Camels amassed a two-day total of 559 strokes (17-under) following an opening round 282 with a 277 Saturday in the event that was shortened to 36 holes due to thunderstorms Friday afternoon.
Svensson recorded the best finish of his collegiate career as the Camels claimed their sixth top-five performance in eight outings. The victory was the 50th for the Campbell men's golf team under the direction of 27th-year head coach John Crooks, who has now amassed 130 career tournament coaching wins combined between the Campbell men and women.
Svensson (70-66—136) finished one stroke behind individual medalist Mike Colgate of Nebraska (66-69—135). The 2016 Big South Conference freshman of the year, Svensson tied for the event lead with 11 birdies, while finishing third in par-4 scoring (-4) and tied for sixth on the par-3 holes (-1). He played a bogey-free final round on the par-72, 7125-yard Laredo Country Club layout, finishing each since 3-under.
His final round 66 and runner-up finish bettered Svensson's previous career performances at the 2016 Big South Conference Championship, where he shot a 67 and finished fourth. He lowered his stroke average to 72.5 over 20 rounds in 2016-17.
McLamb also posted his best collegiate finish and lowest round to help the Camels win the team title at the Border Olympics. A native of nearby Coats, N.C., McLamb was 3-over after his first 3 holes Saturday, but reeled off six birdies, plus an eagle on the 570-yard, par-five 13th hole. He tied for sixth at five-under 139 (73-66), surpassing his previous best collegiate finish by 34 places. McLamb tied for fourth in the field in par-4 scoring (-3) and tied for eighth with nine birdies.
Heading into this weekend's Seahawk Intercollegiate at Landfall, McLamb has lowered his scoring average to 74.0 over 11 rounds.
Campbell men's golfers have accumulated six Big South weekly honors during 2016-17, Svensson's award this week was his second of the year, while Thomas La Morte earned Big South golfer of the week recognition Oct. 28. In addition to McLamb's honor, Max Theodorakis has received freshman of the week status twice.
