NINETY SIX, S.C. – Campbell University will be seeded second for the 2017 Big South Conference men's golf championship which will be held Friday-Sunday at The Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor.
Defending champion Liberty earned the top seed based on its GolfStat national ranking of 48, the highest among the nine Big South men's golf programs. Campbell, last year's runner-up, is ranked No.-71 in the nation by GolfStat and received the second seed, ahead of Gardner-Webb, which is ranked No.-119.
The Big South runner-up in the last two league tournaments – also held at The Patriot – Campbell has amassed seven top-five team finishes in 10 outings this year. Coach John Crooks' squad won the Old Dominion OBX Collegiate last fall and claimed the University of Houston's Border Olympics tourney last month.
Campbell enters this week's play ranked second in the country in par-3 scoring (3.1) and 48th in birdies (455).
Jesper Svensson, the 2016 Big South freshman of the year, leads Campbell and ranks fifth in the Big South with a 72.46 stroke average. The native of Balsta, Sweden owns three top-10 individual finishes this year, including a runner-up at the Border Olympics, where he carded a collegiate low 66 in the final round. He has been named Big South player of the week three times during 2016-17. Svensson finished fourth in the 2016 Big South Championship (67-72-74—213) at 3-under par.
Junior Thomas La Morte stands 10th in the league in scoring average (73.0) and has produced a team-leading four top-10 finishes. A product of Demarest, N.J., La Morte tied for fourth at the ODU/OBX Collegiate, where he shot a career-low 65 in the final round. He was runner-up at the Heel/Pack Individual. His best showing at The Patriot came in 2015 when La Morte tied for 11th at 1-under 215 (71-72-72).
Sophomore Ray Kraivixien of Bangkok, Thailand is ranked 12th in the Big South in stroke average (73.21) and has logged a pair of top-10 showings. He finished fifth at The Hayt Invitational and fourth at the Golfweek Program Challenge, where he shot a collegiate low 68 in the second round. Last year, Kraivixien tied for 16th (78-72-71—221) in the Big South Championship at The Patriot.
Senior Craig Hornberger from Lancaster, Pa., will be making his fourth start in the Big South Championship at The Patriot. He ranks 17th among league stroke average leaders (73.92) this season and owns a pair of top-10 individual finishes, including a tie for fifth last month at the Seahawk Intercollegiate. A year ago, Hornberger produced his best showing in the conference tournament with an eighth-place tie at 1-over 217 (73-74-70).
Red-shirt freshman Brett McLamb of Coats, N.C., is making his debut in the Big South Championship after representing CU in all five events this spring. He produced a season-best sixth-place finish at the Border Olympics, where he was 5-under par (73-66—139) after firing a career-low 66 in the second round.
The Patriot Golf Club (par 72, 7,120 yards) is hosting the Big South Men's Golf Championship for the 12th time in 13 years, as the course has hosted the event every year since 2008 in addition to 2005 and 2006. The 2017 champion will receive the Big South's automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals.
