WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. – The rough lived up to its name Monday in the opening round of the NCAA West Lafayette men's golf regional championship.  Only one team finished under par in the 13-school field and the Pete Dye-designed Kampen Course yielded only 13 scores in red numbers.

Seeded 11th, Campbell finished the day at 18-over-par 306, almost 18 strokes over its season average, and will need to make up 12 shots over the last 36 holes to advance on the par-72, 7411-yard Kampen layout.

"We struggled with our distance today," said Campbell head coach John Crooks.  "We hit a lot of good shots right at the stick, but they were just too long. As a result, instead of making a lot more pars and having many more birdie opportunities, too many of those shots turned into bogeys.  We competed and each of our guys hit a lot of good shots, but they also had some they'd like to have back."

Paced by individual leader John Oda, whose 5-under-par 67 included six birdies and one bogey, No.-17 UNLV is atop the team leader board at one-under-par 287.  Eighth-ranked Illinois and No.-44 New Mexico are tied for second at even-par 288, while No.-28 South Carolina is fourth (291). Fifth-ranked and top-seeded Florida is tied with No.-20 Auburn and host Purdue, the nation's 38th-ranked team for fifth place at four-over 292.

St. Mary's is eighth at 294, followed by Augusta (296), Richmond (297), No.-32 Colorado (304), Campbell (306) and Cleveland State.  The top five teams and low individual not on the qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Championship May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.

Campbell led the field in par-3 scoring as all five Camels played those layouts even.  However, CU was 16-over on the par-four holes and plus-9 on the par fives.

Big South Conference champion and player of the year Jesper Svensson led Campbell with a 3-over-par 75 and is tied for 37th place with 36 holes to play. His round included 13 pars, tied for sixth in the field.  The sophomore from Balsta, Sweden was even over his last 12 holes.

Junior Thomas La Morte is tied for 46th at 4-over 76. Starting from the 10th tee, La Morte made back-to-back birdies on the 14th and 15th holes.  Sophomore Ray Kravixien is tied for 53rd at 5-over 77 after making 13 pars on the day.

Senior Craig Hornberger is tied for 60th at 6-over 78, while red-shirt freshman Brett McLamb, who birdied 3-straight on the front nine, finished at 7-over 79 and is tied for 65th.

Campbell will be paired witih Richmond and Colorado for Tuesday's second round and will start from the 10th tee at 8:55 a.m.  Wednesday's final round begins at 7:30 a.m.
