Campbell’s Men’s Tennis Team Tops UNC Charlotte 5-2

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Campbell took four singles matches and captured two doubles points en route to a 5-2 victory over UNC Charlotte Saturday afternoon.

The Camels (3-2) took two doubles matches to capture the first point of the match. Sophomore David Clavera (Barcelona, Spain) and junior Fernando Guillen (San Louis Potosi, Mexico) picked up a win in the two spot, defeating Charlotte's Alex Calott and Paul Cisti, 8-7 (7-1). In the three position, sophomore Steven Billington (Conway, Wales, U.K.) and senior Ondrej Kralik (Herlev, Denmark) defeated Kamil Khalil and Krysztof Kwasniewicz, 8-5, of Charlotte (3-4).

Guillen improved to 11-6 in singles play this season after his victory in the one spot over the 49ers Jack Williams, 6-3, 6-3.

Clavera won his second match in a row after knocking off Kamil Khalil  in the number four spot, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2). In his first singles' match win of the season, senior Josep Baro (Barcelona, Spain) defeated Paul Cisti in the five spot, 7-5, 6-1.

Freshman Rik Van Gerwen (Valkenswaard, Netherlands) provided the final point to Campbell, taking a decisive tie-breaker against Nate Shanok, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7).

The Camels will return to the courts Feb. 9 at UNC Greensboro.
