CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The Campbell men's tennis team opened its 2017 season with a decisive 6-1 win over the Bucknell Bison Sunday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill. It was the first win for the Camels in a season-opener since 2012.

"We had a good fall season, and the guys worked hard," said head coach David Johnson. "To start the year out with a win and a good performance after only four days of practice was very satisfying."

Campbell (1-0) began the match with a 6-3 doubles win from Lorenz Schwab and Dustin Werner over Max Palmer and Max Kane of Bucknell (0-3). CU went on to clinch the doubles point as Gerard Sola and Jonathan O'Neal defeated Max Haase and Andrei Vitiuc, 6-4.

In the singles flights, the Camels got off to a hot start with two 6-1, 6-2 wins from Sola and Lukas Schaefer to give CU a 3-0 lead. Schwab clinched the win for Campbell, defeating Bucknell's Timber Erskine, 6-2, 7-5.

After CU took a 4-0 lead to seal the win, Werner added another win to the tally. The Germany native defeated Bucknell's Andrei Vitiuc 6-3, 6-1. Freshman Fernando Clemente saw his first action in a dual match for the Camels, competing in the sixth singles flight. He saw a tough match from BU's Ben Gerber, but edged out the win in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4).

Up next, the Campbell men will head to Richmond, Va. to take on UNC Charlotte and Morgan State in two neutral site matches on Friday, January 20. The Camels return home Thursday, February 2 for their home-opener as they host Chowan. For the most up-to-date information on Campbell tennis, follow @GoCamelsTennis on Twitter.
