Men's tennis splits matches at VCU Invite

RICHMOND, VA. – Campbell men's tennis split its two matches at the VCU 4-1 Invite Friday at the Thalhimer Tennis Center. The Fighting Camels fell to the Charlotte 49ers, 4-1, but bounced back in sweeping fashion as they defeated the Bears of Morgan State, 5-0.

Against the 49ers, reigning Big South Player of the Week Gerard Sola recorded the only win for the Fighting Camels, defeating Alejandro Garcia 7-6 (4), 5-7, 10-7 in the third singles flight. Junior Lukas Schaefer came close to a second win for CU after forcing a third set, but fell to Charlotte's Leonardo Menezes 6-3, (5) 6-7, 10-8. Freshman Fernando Clemente was able to take the first set in his singles match, but ultimately lost to Oriol Puig in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

CU looked to redeem itself as they took on Morgan St. later in the afternoon. The Camels gained an early advantage as MSU forfeited the fourth singles flight to Louis Monterosso. Junior Lorenz Schwab quickly collected another win for the Camels, taking every single set as he defeated Sagar Sathyanarayanan, 6-0, 6-0. After dropping the first, Schaefer won back-to-back sets to pick up his second singles win of the season, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Sola and doubles partner Jonathan O'Neal moved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-1, 6-7, 6-3 win over MSU's Arjun Ramakrishnan and Lucas Krusinski. Nicolas Rakitin completed the sweep for Campbell, holding on in the third set to win 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
