Camels take on Hawks in home opener Thursday

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Camels are back in the Creek this week as CU's men's and women's tennis will both host their home-openers against the Chowan Hawks. The action is set to begin at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2 at the Nisbet Tennis Center.

Most recently, the Campbell men competed at the VCU 4-1 Invite, taking on the Charlotte 49ers and the Morgan State Bears. CU fell to UNCC, 4-1, but bounced back in sweeping fashion as they defeated MSU, 5-0. Gerard Sola went 2-0 on the day, winning in singles against Charlotte's Alejandro Moreno, 7-6(4), 5-7, 10-7 and taking his doubles matchup with partner Jonathan O'Neal, 6-1, 6-7, 6-3 over Arjun Ramakrishnan and Lucas Krusinski of Morgan State.

On the women's side, CU opened its season in Raleigh, N.C. as they took on the Mountaineers of Appalachian State followed by the Wolfpack of N.C. State. The Camels got the day started with a 5-2 win over the Mountaineers, with singles wins from Lea CuturaAlexandra AndrivotPauline RoustanMia Covic and Isabel Boada. Immediately following the win, CU took on the host team but fell to the Wolfpack in a sweep, 7-0.

Thursday's matches will be the first of the spring season for both Chowan squads. In the ITA Division II fall rankings, the Chowan men were selected No. 3 in the Atlantic Region while the women were selected No. 6. Individually, Farid Hajizada and Mateusz Izycki are No. 5 and No. 12, respectively, in the men's singles regional rankings. For the Chowan women, Polina Novachuk is ranked 20th regionally.

Following the duals, the Campbell men will stay in town for a second home match against Barton on Friday, Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. while the women will travel to Conway, S.C. to take on the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 1 p.m. For the most up-to-date information on Campbell tennis, follow @GoCamelsTennis on Twitter.
