Camels earn fourth-straight win over USC Upstate, 6-1

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Fighting Camels continued their hot streak Saturday at home as they defeated the USC Upstate Spartans, 6-1. It was the fourth-straight team win for the Campbell men, and sophomores Gerard Sola (5-0) and Dustin Werner (4-0) continued their unbeaten seasons in singles.

The match began with doubles play as Sola and Jonathan O'Neal remained undefeated on the year with a 6-3 win on court three. The Spartans answered with a 6-4 win on court one over Werner and Lorenz Schwab from Upstate's Arora/Haupt. Nicolas Rakitin and Lukas Schaefer clinched the doubles point for Campbell as they won in a close one on court two, 7-5.

The Spartans tied the match at 1-1 with a win at No. 4 singles, but the Camels went on to win the rest of the singles matchups. Schaefer defeated Ewers on court one, 6-1, 6-3, followed by Rakitin who picked up a win at No. 2, 7-5, 6-1. Despite a valiant effort from Bernardes, Werner earned his fourth singles win of the season in three sets, 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 to clinch the victory for Campbell. Sola earned his eight-consecutive singles win, dating back to the fall, on court five over Neto, 6-1, 6-2. Lastly, freshman Fernando Clemente earned his fourth singles win this season on court six, 6-3, 6-1.

Up next, the Campbell men will travel to Conway, S.C. for a pair of matches next weekend. The Camels will face Coastal Carolina on Friday, Feb. 17 at 2 p.m. The next day, they'll take on Appalachian State at noon in a neutral site matchup.
