BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- The Fighting Camels continued their winning ways Tuesday afternoon at the James R. Nisbet Tennis Center, defeating the UNC Greensboro Spartans, 6-1. It was Campbell's seventh-straight victory, moving CU's overall record to 8-1 for the program's best start to a season since 2011. The win also gave Campbell a 4-0 record at home this spring.
Campbell sophomore Gerard Sola refuses to be beaten as he now owns an 8-0 record in singles and a 7-0 record in doubles with partner Jonathan O'Neal this spring. Sola is on a 10-match singles winning streak that dates back to Nov. 12, 2016 at the Wake Forest Invitational. In today's match, Freshman Fernando Clemente earned his sixth-straight singles win, while junior Lorenz Schwab took his third-straight singles victory.
The match began with doubles play, where CU took all three flights. Nicolas Rakitin and Lukas Schaefer won their fifth match of the season on court two over Albright/Burkill, 6-3. Schwab and Dustin Werner clinched the doubles point for Campbell with a 6-3 win over Thompson/Vidgren on court one. Sola and O'Neal kept their undefeated season alive as they defeated Bryan/Melnik on court three, 6-4, to end doubles play.
Campbell's success continued in singles play. Sola won his 16th match of the 2016-17 campaign with a quick 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles. Werner took his match on court three, 6-3, 6-1 and has now won six of his last seven singles matches. Schwab clinced the victory for Campbell on court five with a 6-3, 6-3 win over UNCG's Warren Bryan. Schaefer got back on track with a hard-fought 7-5, 6-2 win on court two, followed by Clemente who earned his sixth-straight win on court six with a 6-3, 7-5 victory. The Spartans' only win of the day came at No. 1 singles where Rakitin fell in a close one, 7-5, 6-4.
Up next, Campbell will host its second home match of the week on Friday, Feb. 24 against East Carolina. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the Nisbet Tennis Center. For the most up-to-date information on Campbell tennis, follow @GoCamelsTennis on Twitter.
