Camels down Eagles, 5-2

BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- The Fighting Camels picked up their second-straight win as they defeated the Winthrop Eagles, 5-2, Friday afternoon at the James R. Nisbet Tennis Center. The win moves Campbell to a perfect 8-0 record at home this spring.

Campbell (14-3, 4-1 BSC) got off to a hot start in doubles play as all three pairings jumped out to a 4-1 lead. The first win of the day came on court three as Fabien Ayet and Lukas Schaefer defeated WU's Gokhale/Ryan, 6-1, good for the duo's first win of the spring. Lorenz Schwab and Dustin Werner clinched the doubles point for CU with a 6-4 win on court one over Dias/Quiroz, snapping a two-match losing skid. Gerard Sola and Jonathan O'Neal completed the doubles sweep at No. 2 with 7-6 victory over Teixeira/Pappayiannis.

Trailing 1-0 headed into singles play, Winthrop (2-10, 1-2 BSC) tied the match with a win on court one, 6-1, 6-2, to snap a four-match win streak for Schaefer. Campbell answered with a victory on court three from Sola, 6-2, 6-3. Up next, Jonathan O'Neal picked up his second win of the week on court five, 6-3, 6-4, to give CU a 3-1 lead.

The match was clinched on court two, where Werner earned his fourth-straight win with a score of 7-5, 6-2. Campbell freshman Fernando Clemente got the final win of the afternoon, defeating Gabriel Dias 6-1, 7-5 on court four. Winthrop earned its second win on court six, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 to end the match.
