Camels dominate Highlanders at home, 6-1

BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- The Fighting Camels earned their tenth-straight win at home in dominant fashion Saturday afternoon as they defeated the Radford Highlanders, 6-1. Campbell has now won seven of its last eight matches, including five of its last six in Big South play.

Campbell (16-3, 5-1 BSC) began the match with doubles play as Jonathan O'Neal and Gerard Sola picked up their team-leading 14th win of the season, defeating Caldwell/Calais on court two, 6-1. Lorenz Schwab and Dustin Werner clinched the doubles point on court one with their third-straight victory. The German duo defeated Magalhaes/Varga at No. 1 doubles, 6-2. Fernando Clemente and Fabien Ayet paired up for the first time since Feb. 2 against Chowan. The Campbell freshmen took a 5-1 lead on court three, but the match went unfinished as the doubles point had already been decided.

The Camels carried their momentum from doubles into singles action. O'Neal earned the first singles win of the day on court five, 6-3, 6-0, for his sixth-straight victory. Schwab followed with a win in straight sets at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-2, to give Campbell a 3-0 advantage over Radford.

The match was clinched by senior Nicolas Rakitin, who returned to the lineup after missing three weeks with an ankle injury. Rakitin faced RU's Samuel Taylor on court three, picking up the win in straight sets by a score of 6-1, 6-2.

Werner represented Campbell at No. 1 singles and bounced back with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Radford's top player in Alexadros Caldwell. Five-time Big South Freshman of the Week Clemente won his fourth-straight singles match after taking the tiebreaker set, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4). The Highlanders' only win of the day came on court two, where Magalhaes defeated Sola in a tiebreaker on court two, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5).

Up next, the Camels are set to host their fifth-straight home match against the South Carolina State Bulldogs. That contest is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 6 at the James R.
