Camels fall in close match at Gardner-Webb, 4-3

BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- The Fighting Camels fell in a close match to the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs, 4-3, Tuesday afternoon at the GWU Tennis Courts. The loss brings both teams to a tie for second in the Big South standings as each squad boasts a 5-2 record in conference play this season.

Campbell (16-4, 5-2 BSC) took two out of three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Gerard Sola and Jonathan O'Neal dropped just their fourth doubles match of the season on court two, 6-1. CU answered with a 7-5 win from Lukas Schaefer and Fabien Ayet at No. 3 doubles. Lorenz Schwab and Dustin Werner won their fourth-straight match to clinch the doubles point, taking down Gardner-Webb's top duo of Fors/Hogan, 7-6.

Gardner-Webb (11-11, 5-2 BSC) responded with four wins in singles play to claim the overall victory. Playing at No. 2 singles, Werner started singles action with a win over Paul Hogan, 6-4, 6-1, good for his second-straight victory. Following that match, the Runnin' Bulldogs rattled off three-straight wins on courts four, six and one to take a 3-2 lead. Sola tied the match at No. 3 singles, winning in straight sets by a score of 7-6, 6-3.

The match came down to court four, where CU's reigning Big South Freshman of the Week Fernando Clemente took on GWU's Johan Fors. Clemente took the first set in a tiebreaker, but ultimately dropped the next two for a final score of 6-7, 6-2, 7-6. It was just his fourth loss in singles play this spring.
