Men's tennis notches six Big South all-conference honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Campbell men's tennis team has earned six Big South all-conference honors, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon. In singles, sophomores Gerard Sola and Dustin Werner were named First Team All-Conference, while Campbell freshman Fernando Clemente was selected to the Big South's Second Team. In doubles, Lorenz Schwab and Werner earned First Team All-Conference honors, while Jonathan O'Neal and Sola received a Second Team All-Conference nod. In addition to first team singles and doubles honors, Werner was also named to the conference's All-Academic Team.

Sola opened the season with a 12-match singles win streak and finished the spring with a 16-3 overall singles record. A three-time Big South Player of the Week, the Vic, Spain native went 127 days without a loss from Nov. 11, 2016 through March 18, 2017. Sola boasted a 4-2 record in Big South play, and his 16 total wins this spring are tied for fourth in the conference. Playing at spots two through five, he saw the most success at No. 4 singles with an 8-0 record this season.

Werner had the most singles success in conference play for the Camels as he boasted a 6-1 record in Big South action. The Reutlingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany native started and finished the season strong, opening the spring with five-straight wins and closing out winning six of his last eight singles matches. Playing at spots one through four, he saw the most success at No. 2 singles with a 5-0 record in that flight this season.

Clemente, a five-time Big South Freshman of the Week, boasted a 16-5 overall singles record this spring, including a 5-2 mark in conference play. The Barcelona, Spain native got his career off to a hot start, winning 11 of his first 13 singles flights in dual match action. His 16 total wins this season tie for fourth-most in the conference with Sola. Clemente played as high as No. 3 singles this season and dominated the sixth singles flight with a 9-1 record in that spot this spring.

Campbell's top doubles duo of Schwab and Werner closed the season on a six-match win streak to earn First Team All-Conference honors. Playing at No. 1 doubles in all but one match, the German duo went 11-7 this spring with a 5-2 mark in Big South play.

O'Neal and Sola were named Second Team All-Conference in doubles after boasting a 16-4 overall record with a 5-2 record in Big South action. The duo opened the season with an eight-match win streak and claimed 11 of their first 12 contests this spring.

The Campbell men travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. this week for the Big South Men's Tennis Championship. The Camels will take on the Radford Highlanders in the quarterfinals, set for a noon start on Wednesday, April 19.
