Softball Splits Games On Second Day of Lipton Invitational

GAINESVILLE, Fla.  – Senior Taylor McGee provided the late game heroics for Campbell's softball team (9-10) with her two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give CU a 3-1 win over Eastern Michigan (3-11) in the team's first game of the day at the Lipton Invitational. The Camels lost the night cap, 3-2, to Tennessee State (6-7) despite outhitting the Tigers 6 to 4.

McGee's seventh inning home run came after sophomore Raven Lee started the rally with her walk. Freshman Kerstine Womack was inserted to run for Lee and scored on McGee's home run. The home run would be the first of two on the day for the senior and give her 36 career home runs.

Freshman Julia Callicutt (2-1) was dominating in allowing one unearned run in throwing the first complete game of her career in the victory over the Eagles. The loss was taken by Lindsay Rush (0-4). Rush only allowed three hits and runs in taking the loss.

EMU started the scoring with a run in the first. Jessica Richards reached on an error and also took second on the play. She then stole second and scored the game's first run on McKenna Russ' single to left field.

CU tied the game with a run in the first. Junior Sarah Forgacs began the game with a triple. She would score as freshman Ericka Nesbitt pushed a single up the middle.

EMU threatened in the sixth inning. Russ singled to right, moved to second on a bunt and then third on a strikeout to put a runner on third with two outs. Callicutt then rose to the challenge and recorded a strikeout of Courtney Nicholson to end the inning, keep the game knotted at one and set up McGee's home run.

The second game of the day saw Kelly Troglin (1-2) outduel junior Brittany Arnn (4-4). Arnn allowed three runs (two earned) in her six innings of work. Troglin allowed just six hits and two runs with three strikeouts in earning the victory.

Tennessee State scored an unearned run in the second inning. Jordan Rehl reached on an error. She also took second on the play. Brittany Davis drove her in with a single to center field.

TSU added a pair of runs to the lead in the third inning. Savannah Gutierrez reached on a lead-off walk. Troglin moved her to second with a single. Tedra Alford doubled in Gutierrez and moved Troglin to third with her hit. Rehl drove in the final run with her infield ground out.

The Camels drew to within a run in the sixth inning on McGee's two-run home run. Lee started the rally with a two-out single. Womack was again inserted to run for Lee and scored on McGee's blast. The home run was her fifth of the season.

The Camels attempted to rally in the top of the seventh inning. Freshman Brittany Bruce started the frame with a single through the right side. A sacrifice bunt from fellow rookie Kailey Farmer moved her to second. A ground out moved Bruce to third, but Troglin recorded a strikeout to end the game and give the Tigers the victory.
