BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Campbell's softball team (19-19, 4-3 Big South) fell to Gardner-Webb (16-20, 3-5 Big South) by an 8-0 score in five innings in the first game of the conference doubleheader on Friday, April 6, at Varsity Field. The team will play a second game against the Bulldogs starting at 3:30 p.m. this afternoon.
Junior Brittany Arnn (8-8) took the loss for Campbell and allowed five runs in 1.1 innings worked. Freshman Julia Callicutt threw the final 3.1 innings for Campbell and allowed six hits, three runs (two earned) with five walks and four strikeouts. The win was earned by Gardner-Webb's Jessica Childers (4-7). Childers allowed just four hits with seven strikeouts.
Freshman Kerstine Womack had two of the Camels' four hits in the game.
The Runnin' Bulldogs took the early lead with two in the first inning. Jordyn Arrowood singled to left field and came in to score on Savannah Burns' two-run shot to left field.
GWU scored three in the second inning. Elizabeth Williams singled to start the frame. Jane Savage followed with a single of her own. After a sacrifice bunt moved each runner up a base, Samantha Meenaghan tripled to right center to plate pinch runner Rachel Jablonski and Savage. Meenaghan was then retired on the fielder's choice that allowed Arrowood to reach. Arrowood moved to second and then third on Burns' single. A wild pitch brought in Arrowood with the third run of the inning and fifth of the game.
The Bulldogs completed the scoring with three in the fifth inning. Elizabeth Williams began the inning with a single to the pitcher. A sacrifice bunt moved her to second. A fielding error allowed Melinda Dulkowski to reach first and take second while pinch runner Emily Bowman moved to third. Meenaghan walked to load the bases. A walk to pinch hitter Amanda Gomes drove in Bowman from third. Burns drove in the final two runs of the game with her single up the middle.
