Softball Downs Charleston Southern 2-1
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Campbell's softball team (21-22, 6-4 Big South) were able to outlast conference rival Charleston Southern (23-19, 8-5 Big South) by a 2-1 score in the first game of the doubleheader between the teams on Friday, April 13, at Buccaneer Field.
Sophomore Olivia Scarborough (5-3) was in control throughout the game and scattered four hits and allowed just one run in throwing her sixth complete game of the season. The loss was taken by Morgan Dowdy (14-10). Dowdy allowed two runs in her seven innings worked with two walks and five strikeouts.
The Buccaneers threatened in the first inning as Kristin Kelleher reached on a lead-off single. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and third on Megan Lombard's single to center. Two straight strikeouts from Scarborough ended the potential rally though.
Charleston Southern broke through for a run in the second inning. Hannah Wagner was hit by a pitch with one out. A wild pitch moved Wagner to second. Melissa Adams moved Wagner to third with her single. A walk then loaded the bases with two-away for Jessica Brock. Brock was hit by a pitch to force in Wagner with the first run of the afternoon.
The Camels plated a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Junior Sarah Forgacs drew a lead-off walk, moved to second on a ground out and scored on McGee's infield single. McGee took second on errant throw home and scored on freshman Kailey Farmer's double down the left field line for the eventual game-winner.
