RADFORD, Va. – After trailing 4-0 in the first of game one, Campbell bounced back to take 9-8 victory in 11 innings at Radford as the teams traded the lead four times. The Camels notched two fourth-inning runs to secure a 4-3 win during the second contest.
Sophomore Camise Patterson (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) blasted the game-tying two-run homer off the top of the fence in center in the seventh inning of game one, 7-7. The Camels scored two in the top of the 10th on a junior Raven Lee (Battleboro, N.C.), who finished the day with a team-high four hits, single through the right side.
Radford knotted the contest at nine with a two-run round tripper by Naegle in the bottom-half of the frame.
The Camels responded with two runs in the 11th as sophomore centerfielder Stephanie Jones (Black Mountain, N.C.) had a two-out RBI, and she eventually scored on a throwing error by the shortstop to put the guests up 9-7. Arnn and the Campbell defense allowed the runner on second to score, but two ground outs and a strikeout ended the threat.
Senior right fielder Sarah Forgacs (Cary, N.C.) hit a solo homer to start the scoring for the Camels, while sophomore third baseman Brittany Bruce (Lumberton, N.C.) struck with a two-run shot in the fifth.
The Highlanders were led by Ryndee Ruch and Jessica Agee with a home run and two base knocks each.
The wins were picked up by senior Brittany Arnn (Danville, Va.), who finished game one to move to 5-7, and sophomore Julia Callicutt (Asheboro, N.C.) in a complete-game effort, fanning three. Freshman Courtney Roberts (Simpsonville, S.C.) tallied 11 strikeouts in 9.2 innings of work, while yielding six earned runs.
The Camels scored first in game two as Jones reached on a lead-off error and moved to third on a groundout. An error by the third baseman off the bat of Klingler plated the first run.
Radford immediately answered as Naegle homered to left on the first pitch of the frame off Callicutt, while Agee connected on a round tripper to left center that put the Highlanders up, 2-1.
A Lee single in front of the right fielder knotted the contest at two, scoring Nesbitt.
The game continued to go back and forth as Morgan Eye registered an RBI single to right with two outs to put the home team back on top, 3-2.
Junior designated player Olivia Scarborough (Buies Creek, N.C.) began the fourth with a single up the middle. Patterson hit the gap in left center as junior pinch runner Amanda Daw (Pantego, N.C.) scored the game-tying run.
Tallying the game-winning run was Jones with a single to right that put Campbell on top, 4-3.
The Camels took a number of runs away from the Highlanders as Bruce totaled seven putouts and nine assists at third during the doubleheader. She also made a couple of diving snags on liners that would have gone through the left side.
Rachael Walters (12-8) tossed the compete 11-inning game, allowing six earned runs on 11 hits and fanning 11. Two earned runs and four strikeouts were tallied Jackie Jenkins (3-18) in game two.
