Softball Splits at Hampton, 3-4, 9-4

HAMPTON, Va. – Campbell bounced back with a 9-4 win in game two after Hampton scored two in the seventh to take the first, 4-3, on Thursday afternoon at the Hampton Softball Stadium. Sophomore shortstop Stephanie Jones (Black Mountain, N.C.) tallied five hits and one RBI for the Camels.

The Lady Pirates notched a single up the middle by Margarett Wilkins, double to left center by Bobbi Langois and a fielding miscue to notch the come-from-behind win in game one. It was the first setback for Campbell (36-16) after the team held the lead after five innings (24-1).

In the circle, sophomore Julia Callicutt (Asheboro, N.C.) tossed a complete-game seven hitter, while fanning five to improve to 10-1. The loss in game one was given to senior Brittany Arnn (Danville, Va.), who relieved freshman Courtney Roberts (Simpsonville, S.C.) after one strikeout in 6.0 innings of work.

The decision in both contests was given to Langlois (5-11), who registered six strikeouts during the doubleheader. Jailynn Jackson tossed 4.1 innings in game two and fanned five.

Campbell found its offense in game two by connecting on three home runs. Sophomore outfielder Camise Patterson (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) blasted a two-run shot in the second to start the scoring, while an inning later freshman catcher Courtney Klingler connected on her 11th of the season to extend the lead to 4-0.

Capping the scoring in the seventh with a three-run round tripper was junior Raven Lee (Battleboro, N.C.) to put the Camels up 9-3. The homer was the 16th of the campaign as she moved to second on the all-time list in a tie with Karlie Love (2009).

Hampton was led by Wilkins in the first with three hits and Taylor McCoy in the second with a pair of base knocks.

The Camels began with three runs on four hits to start the afternoon as Klingler started a two-out rally with a double to left center. Lee plated the catcher on a single to left before a double by senior right fielder Sarah Forgacs (Cary, N.C.) put the Camels up, 2-0.

After an infield single by junior designated player Olivia Scarborough (Buies Creek, N.C.), Forgacs scored on an attempted pickoff by the catcher as the ball went down the left field line, 3-0.

From there, Langlois held the Campbell offense in check with two hits the rest of the way.

Hampton registered single runs in the third and fifth to setup a one-run game in the seventh. With the game-winning run at third, Nina Ferguson reached on a fielding miscue to notch the walk-off victory.

In game two, the Camels had a pair of two-run homers by Patterson in the second and Klingler in the third, 4-0. Hampton plated its first run on a lead-off triple by Diamond Ponds, who scored on throw that eluded the third baseman.

Jones notched a two-out single to third in the fifth and stole second, advancing to third on a wild throw by the catcher. She scored the fifth run on a passed ball.

The Lady Pirates added two more runs in the sixth on three hits, aided by two errors.

A single by Jones up the middle scored junior pinch runner Amanda Daw (Pantego, N.C.) in the seventh. After sophomore third baseman Kerstine Womack (Broadway, N.C.) walked, Lee connected on a shot that hit the scoreboard to increase the lead to 9-3.

Hampton added their fourth run in the bottom half on a triple by Bianca Vallejo and RBI-single by McCoy.

The Camels return to action at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium on May 4 in a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Longwood with the first game being broadcasted nationally on ESPN3. Seniors Arnn and Forgacs will be honored prior to the team's finale on May 5 at 2 p.m.
