Softball earns five NCCSIA All-State honors

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) announced on Thursday that Campbell had three all-state softball first team selections in freshman Courtney Roberts (Simpsonville, S.C.), sophomore shortstop Ericka Nesbitt (Salisbury, N.C.) and junior first baseman Raven Lee along with the pair of freshman catcher Courtney Klingler (Alvin, Texas) and sophomore outfielder Stephanie Jones (Black Mountain, N.C.).

This is the second all-state honor for Nesbitt, who received the honor as a freshman, when just a single 12-member team was released. The Big South was also represented on the all-state teams by Samantha Meenaghan and Morgan Baker of Gardner-Webb.

Nesbitt, an All-Big South First Team performer, tallied a .419 avg. and .457 on-base pct., while swiping a team-high 22 bases as the Camels posted a 39 win campaign. The Salisbury, N.C., native recorded 21 multi-hit games to pace the squad and reached base in each of the first 19 games of the season.

The second-most RBI (70) and homers (18) in a single-season in Campbell history were tallied by Lee. The Battleboro, N.C., native compiled a .323 batting avg., while notching 18 multi-hit and 20 multi-RBI games. The All-Big South First Team player ranked in the top five in the league in homers, RBI, total bases (109) and slugging (.690).

After becoming the fifth player in program history to pick up 20 victories, Roberts posted a 10-1 league mark to aid the Camels to an 18-6 mark in the Big South. The Simpsonville, S.C., native totaled 142 strikeouts in 169.2 innings of work, while carrying a 3.22 ERA during her rookie campaign. Robert tied the school record with 12 punch outs against Liberty on March 29.

Earning second-team recognition was Jones, who put up a .372 avg. and drove in 36 runs during the campaign. The Black Mountain, N.C., native hit 12 doubles and seven homers on a career-best 71 base knocks. The All-Big South First Team player stole 20 bases and registered 19 multi-hit and nine multi-RBI games.

Klingler, the Big South Freshman of the Year, posted a .339 avg., 13 home runs and 54 RBI to garner second-team accolades. She rose to the occasion in conference play, leading the Camels by batting at a .373 clip and driving in 27 runs. The Alvin, Texas, native guided the team's pitching staff and caught 13 base runners attempting to steal, while picking off another three.

The all-state first team also consisted of pitcher Raeanne Hanks (UNCG), catcher Lindsay Thomas (UNCG), infielder Lauryn Buckworth (UNCW), outfielders Allie Cashion (Appalachian State), Tomeka Watson (Elon) and Carleigh Nester (Elon), designated player Katelyn Bedwell (UNCG) and utility player Aisha Figueroa (UNCG).

Nominees were submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals and voted on by the NCCSIA members.
