BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Head coach Drew Peterson announced the Campbell softball team awards on Monday with sophomore outfielder Stephanie Jones (Black Mountain, N.C.) garnering MVP honors.
Sophomore outfielder Camise Patterson (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) was selected as most improved, freshman catcher Courtney Klingler (Alvin, Texas) earned rookie of the year, junior second baseman Amanda Daw (Pantego, N.C.) was tabbed for the hustle award and senior Brittany Arnn (Danville, Va.) received the coaches' award.
Statistical honors were also released as Jones had the lowest strikeout pct. at .083, junior first baseman Raven Lee (Battleboro, N.C.) tallied the highest on-base-plus-slugging (OBPS) pct. at 1.117 and freshman hurler Courtney Roberts (Simsponvile, S.C.) compiled the lowest walks-plus-hits-per-inning-pitched (WHIP) at 1.39.
The Camels were led during the 2013 campaign by the senior duo of Sarah Forgacs (Cary, N.C.) and Arnn. Campbell posted 39 victories and set a program record with 18 Big South victories and 118 stolen bases.
"Sarah and Brittany were a clear choice as team captains from day one," said coach Peterson. "It is always a blessing as a coach to see the young women on our team mature into leaders. They both bought into our program and are great examples of what we hope a Campbell Softball player will become."
Jones was tabbed to the All-Big South First Team as an outfielder after a stellar campaign batting .372 with 71 hits, 12 doubles and seven homers. She swiped 20 bases and compiled a .970 fielding pct.
"Stephanie was rock solid for us both, defensively and offensively," said coach Peterson. "She was a model of consistency, and it gave our coaching staff great confidence knowing she was going to be there mentally and physically every game."
The Black Mountain, N.C., native played in the outfield and infield for the Camels, while showing her ability as a capable leadoff and cleanup hitter during the campaign.
Earning the second-consecutive Big South Freshman of the Year award for the Camels was Klingler, who posted a .339 avg. along with 12 doubles and 13 home runs. The catcher caught 16 runners attempting to steal bases, while another five were picked off.
"Becoming the second Big South Freshman of the Year in the program's history made Courtney a clear choice for rookie of the year," said coach Peterson. "She broke the record for most home runs as a freshman in program history, but even beyond that Courtney became a team member that we were able to depend on. Having a trustworthy player is invaluable to us."
The Alvin, Texas native aided the underclassman duo of Roberts and sophomore Julia Callicutt (Asheboro, N.C.) to account for 30 wins in the circle.
One player that came on strong during the second-half of the season was Patterson, who became an everyday presence in left field. The Fuquay-Varina, N.C., native totaled 21 hits including six homers and drove in 14 runs.
"Our team is blessed to have Camise on it," said coach Peterson. "She brings joy and enthusiasm to our time together as a team, and makes it all the more enjoyable for us as we have witnessed her steady rise athletically."
Daw saw limited playing action at second base, but made the biggest impact on the Camels off the field and in practice.
"Amanda was a true example of hustle day in and day out," said coach Peterson. "Her hustle is contagious, and clearly impressed her teammates as much as she did the coaching staff."
The Pantego, N.C., native did score 11 times as a pinch runner and picked up her first collegiate hit, which ended up being a walk-off single to top Liberty, 4-3, in the bottom of the seventh.
