Coach Peterson on the win "It was a great win for our team, we played Campbell softball today and it was a lot of fun and I am proud of the girls."
Katie Baker earned the win pitching five innings, scattering four hits, one run (one earned), walking three and striking out three. The win for Baker pushes her record to 6-5 on the season and Campbell's overall record to 14-12.
Kendra Lynch is charged with the loss for the Tar Heels. She pitched two innings, allowing five runs (five earned) on three hits while walking one and striking out one.
Campbell was paced at the plate by Courtney Klinger, who was three-for-four with a home run driving in three. Milly Martinet was two-for-four with two homeruns driving in four.
Campbell rallied for three runs in the top of the first inning. Ericka Nesbitt walked to lead off the game; Kerstine Womack reached via a fielder's choice. Klingler doubled to right centerfield scoring Womack on an errant throw, advancing Klingler to third. Martinet drove the second pitch of her at bat over the centerfield fence to push CU's lead to 3-0. The Tar Heels answered with a leadoff homerun by Kristen Brown, cutting the lead to 3-1 after the first.
Campbell went in order to in the top of the second. The Tar Heels scratched across run, when Jordan Scarborough doubled to right centerfield and was driven in on a two out single by Kristen Brown. Campbell still led 3-2 going to the top of the third.
Ericka Nesbitt singled to start the top of the third inning for CU. Womack reached via an error by the third basemen, placing runners at second and third. Nesbitt scored on an illegal pitch. Klingler hit the second pitch of her at-bat over the left field fence pushing the Campbell lead to 6-2. North Carolina went in order in its half of the third.
Womack started the top of the fifth inning with a single to left field. Martinet homered to left field, extending the CU lead to 8-3. The Tar Heels went in order to close out the fifth.
Shaela Churchill singled with one out in the top of the sixth inning. Pinch runner Amanda Daw scored on a single by Klingler giving CU a 9-3 lead. Katie Baker induced three groundballs to hold the lead at 9-3.
Campbell returns to Amanda Littlejohn Stadium Wednesday to take on Syracuse at 5 p.m.
