Camels fall in series finale against Winthrop
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Winthrop defeated Campbell 7-2 in the series deciding game at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium Saturday afternoon. Campbell was led at the plate by Milly Martinet, who was 3-for-4 and Bailey Bjorson, who went 2-for-3 with two singles.
Sutton Watson earned the win in relief for Winthrop. She pitched four innings, allowing one earned run on five hits, while striking out two. The win for Watson moves her to 9-5 on the season and the Eagles to 21-19 overall and 9-8 in the Big South.
Courtney Roberts is charged with loss for the Camels. Roberts pitched 4.2 innings allowing three earned runs on four hits while walking one and striking out five. The loss for Roberts drops her to 8-5 on the season and moves Campbell to 23-20 on the campaign and 9-6 in the Big South.
Winthrop was led at the plate by Naomi Stevens, McKenzi Corn, and Maddie Antone who each went 2-for-3 on the day. Stevens scored a run, Corn drove in a run and scored twice, and Antone drove in three and scored once.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning. Winthrop's Stevens led off the inning with a single. She swiped second on a 0-2 count and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Stevens was tagged out on an attempted squeeze play by the batter Corn. On the very next pitch Corn hit a home run over the right field fence to give the Eagles a 1-0 edge. Brittany Bruce singled and swiped second to put a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the fourth. Bruce advanced to third on a single by Bjorson. Churchill drove a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Bruce and tie the game 1-1 going to the fifth.
The Eagles added two runs on two hits in the top of the fifth. Alex White walked and was advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Kelsey Ritter. Antone then doubled to centerfield scoring White from second. Antone advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a ground out. Winthrop led 3-1. Campbell's Womack and Martinet hit back-to-back singles putting runners at first and second with no one out in the bottom of the fifth. The runners each advanced a base on a passed ball. Raven Lee hit a sacrifice fly to left field plating Womack. Winthrop led 4-2 going to the sixth.
Winthrop had runners on first and third with two outs in the top of the sixth inning. Antone tripled over off the top of the wall right field wall, scoring Corn and Kelsey Ritter.
Winthrop added two more runs in the top of the seventh to extend its lead to 7-2. The Eagles induced two line outs and a fly out to secure the 7-2 victory over Campbell.
CU travels to play SEC opponent South Carolina Tuesday, April 8 at 6 p.m.
