Campbell splits day one of Furman/USC Upstate Classic

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Campbell split its opening two contests on day one at the Furman/USC Upstate Classic at Cyrill Stadium.

The Camels defeated Iona in game one Friday afternoon, 10-2. In game two, CU fell in eight innings to USC Upstate, 3-2.

Amber Schisler started the weekend in a big way, as she pitched a complete game in the 10-2 win versus Iona. She also went 4-for-5 at the plate, drove in a pair of runs and scored once.

Madison Herring went 3-for-4 in game two against USC Upstate and scored once. Rachel McCollum scored the other run for Campbell during the contest.

Game one: Campbell 10, Iona 2

Campbell began the scoring in the top of the first inning courtesy of Taesha DuBoise's RBI single that scored Schisler from second.

The Camels exploded for four runs in the next inning to take a 5-0 lead. With two on, Katie Baker hit a first pitch RBI single to score Megan Mozingo. Two batters later, McCollum hit her fourth home run of the season, a three-run shot to give CU it's five-run advantage.

Iona added one in the bottom of the fourth on Tori Danner's solo home run to left centerfield.

CU scored three in the top of the sixth inning to claim a seven-run lead. With the bases loaded, McCollum drew a four-pitch walk to score one. One batter later, Schisler hit a 2-RBI single that scored Baker and Herring to give Campbell an 8-1 lead.

The Gaels notched their second solo home run of the day in the bottom of the seventh off the bat of Kimberly Chiapparelli cut the Campbell lead to eight, 10-2.

Schisler went the distance for Campbell as she picked up her second win of the season. She struck out seven and allowed five hits on the afternoon. Jessica Harkness pitched 3.1 innings in the loss as she allowed seven hits and five earned runs.

Game two: Campbell 2, USC Upstate 3 [F/8]

Similar to game one, Campbell opened the scoring in the first inning, as it took an early 2-0 lead. Herring scored the first run by way of Haydn Parker's RBI single to centerfield. One batter later, DuBoise hit a sac fly to center, which plated McCollum and gave CU its two-run lead.

Upstate answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the same inning. After the second pitch hit the leadoff hitter Ansley Gilstrap, Karla Beasley hit a two-run home run to right centerfield to tie the contest.

Neither team scored until the bottom of the eighth when a throwing error scored Beasley from third to give USC Upstate the extra inning victory. Campbell recorded seven hits in the first four innings of play, but Upstate held CU hitless for the remainder of the contest. 

Lexi Shubert picked up her first win of the season with a complete game performance. She struck out nine batters and allowed seven hits on the day. Holly Brooks dropped to 1-1 in relief effort of Baker, who went 6.2 innings on the day.
