Softball picks up series sweep over Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Campbell picked up a pair of wins on Saturday to sweep Winthrop and move into second place in the Big South.

CU (23-20, 8-4) took a 10-6 win in game one and claimed a 9-2 victory over Winthrop (20-20, 6-5) in game two to earn the series sweep.

Game one: Campbell 10, Winthrop 6

Amber Schisler led Campbell to a 10-6 series-clinching win over Winthrop in game one of Saturday afternoon's doubleheader.

Schisler posted a 2-for-3 day, scoring three times and driving in two runs. She also drew one walk in the contest. Taesha DuBoise went 2-for-3 and scored twice in the game.

Campbell opened the scoring in the top of the fourth inning, beginning with Megan Mozingo's RBI single. Caroline Smith also scored on the play due to an error by the right fielder. Mozingo scored from third on Bailey Bjorson's RBI single and Christa Hall plated DuBoise on a RBI bunt single.

CU's lead improved to 5-0 in the next inning on Schisler's solo home run to centerfield. The Eagles scored one in the bottom of the fifth on Paige Haley's RBI groundout to score Tara Loken.

The Camels stretched their lead to 10-1 in the sixth inning. Madison Herring scored two runs with her triple to right field to give CU a 7-1 lead. Schisler drove in Herring on her double to left centerfield. Melissa Tullar pushed Schisler and Caroline Smith across on a single to center, which gave CU its nine-run lead.

Winthrop scored five runs in the last two innings to reach the final score line. In the sixth, Leah Young drove in one on her RBI double and then scored on Madyson Watson's two-run home run to left centerfield. Maddie Antone connected on a two-run home run to score the final two runs for Winthrop.

Megan Richards (3-2) picked up the win in five innings of work, allowing just one run and four hits. Keleigh Romine (3-5) took the loss in five innings, giving up five runs and walking three.

Game two: Campbell 9, Winthrop 2

Campbell sprinted to a 7-0 lead after four innings en route to a 9-2 win and a series sweep over Winthrop in Saturday's game two.

Madison Casto posted a 3-for-3 day to lead the Campbell offense, scoring once. Bailey Bjorson went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Schisler notched another 2-for-3 game with two RBI and two runs.

The Camels wasted little time getting on the board, scoring three in the top of the first. Schisler's RBI single scored Herring to open the scoring. DuBoise drew a bases loaded walk to score Schisler and Bjorson hit a RBI infield single to score Perryman.

Campbell's lead jumped to 4-0 in the second, as Tullar reached on a fielder's choice that scored Herring from third.

CU tacked on three more runs in the fourth inning to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Schisler drove in Caroline Smith with a RBI single and score on Perryman's fielder's choice. Perryman scored on a double steal that saw Casto swipe second.

Winthrop scored twice in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles from Maddie Antone and Ashley Westbrooks to cut the Campbell lead to 7-2.

Campbell pushed the lead back to seven with a RBI single from Bjorson in the sixth and a wild pitch that scored Smith in the seventh.

Katie Baker (11-7) picked up her 11th win in five innings of work, allowing just two runs and striking out four. Kiley Majette (11-11) went 3.1 innings, allowing seven runs and walking five in the loss
