Softball set for 2017 Big South Championship May 10-13

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Following a second place finish in the regular season, Campbell softball is set for the 2017 Big South Championships hosted by Longwood University in Farmville, Va., May 10-13.

Campbell is the No. 2 seed in the tournament and will open play May 11 at 2:30 p.m. The Camels will take on the winner of Wednesday's matchup between No. 3 Longwood and No. 6 Radford.

On Tuesday afternoon, Amber Schisler was named the 2017 Big South Player of the Year. She also earned first team honors at the designated player position. Taesha DuBoise also placed on the first team all-conference as one of three outfielders on the team. Katie Baker was named to the all-academic team and the honorable mention all-conference team along with catcher Bailey Bjorson.

The Camels finished with a 29-25 overall record and 13-8 mark in the Big South. CU finished tied with Longwood for second, but with Campbell's series win over the Lancers March 18-19, the Camels won the tiebreaker for the second seed. 

Campbell won five of its seven Big South series' this season, including series sweeps over Winthrop and Radford in back-to-back weekends.

Schisler continues to lead the Camels offense, posting a .430 batting average along with 17 home runs and 49 RBI. Caroline Smith is batting .320 on the year along with six home runs and 28 RBI, second best on the squad. Madison Herring's 29 stolen bases is a team-high and is second in the Big South.

In the circle, Baker continues to lead the squad with a 3.21 ERA, along with 105 strikeouts and 15 wins. She set the school record in strikeouts in 2017 and currently has 574 in her career. Schisler assists the pitching efforts for Campbell as well, sitting second with 29 strikeouts and eight wins, along with a 4.49 ERA.

Against Longwood, Campbell took 2-of-3 from the Lancers. CU dropped the series opener 7-6 in 10 innings, but bounced back with a 10-9 win in game two and clinched the series with a 9-2 win. At Radford, the Camels took a pair of one run wins, 3-2 and 5-4, along with a 14-6 win to sweep the Highlanders.
