Camels fall in NISC opener to Iona, 3-2

LYNCHBURG, VA. – Iona slipped by Campbell, 3-2, Tuesday afternoon in the opening round of the National Invitational Softball Championship hosted by Liberty University.

Hailey Thompson went 3-for-3 on the day, scoring once and driving in one run for the Gaels. Tori Danner and Marisa Gergel also drove in runs for Iona in the contest.

Melissa Tullar and Bailey Bjorson drove in Campbell's two runs in the contest. Amber Schisler was walked four times, bringing her season total to 56.

Iona opened up the scoring with a pair of runs in the third inning. Gergel plated the first run on a RBI single to center and Danner was walked with the bases loaded to give their side a 2-0 lead.

The Gaels added one more in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead on Thompson's RBI single into left field that scored Jasmine Temple.

Campbell answered back with one in the bottom of the sixth on Bjorson's RBI sacrifice fly to right field that plated Taesha DuBoise from third.

Tullar's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh closed the gap to one, 3-2, as Schisler scored from second base. A fielder's choice to second base ended the contest.

Alana Evans (17-6) picked up the complete game win for Iona, allowing just three hits and two runs. Katie Baker (15-11) took the loss in a complete game effort, giving up three earned and seven hits.

Campbell will take on the loser of Liberty vs. UNCW at noon on Wednesday in the first elimination game of the regional. The Liberty vs. UNCW contest is set for tonight at 7 p.m.
