Late rally lifts Elon over Lady Camels, 56-49

ELON, N.C. – Elon ended the game on an 11-0 run over the final 3:21 to secure a 56-49 victory over Campbell on Friday night at Alumni Gym. Junior guard D Janelle Brown (Oklahoma City, Okla.) paced the Lady Camels with 17 points, converting five three-point field goals, and became the team's seventh different leading scorer.

After D Brown put Campbell (7-3) on top, 49-45, with 4:46 left, Zora Stephenson nailed back-to-back three pointers for Elon (4-6) to take the lead and change the momentum. The Phoenix defense stepped up and held the Lady Camels without a point down the stretch.

Campbell was held to 27.6 pct. (8-29) from the field in the second half, while Elon compiled a 39.3 pct. (11-28). All 15 points for Stephenson came in the second half, while D Brown added 14 points for the Lady Camels in the stanza.

Turnovers played a key role throughout the game as 25 mistakes for the Lady Camels led to 29 points for the Phoenix. Seven of the 14 steals for Elon were credited to Kelsey Harris.

Junior guard Kiera Gaines (Mechanicsville, Va.) scored 10 points, while senior guard Jessica Moore (Jacksboro, Tenn.) was 2-for-2 from beyond the arc.

The Lady Camels fell for the first time this season when securing more rebounds than their opponent, 40-36. A game-high 15 offensive rebounds were grabbed by Campbell leading to 10 points, but the Phoenix made the most of their 13 second-chance opportunities with 16 points.

Senior forward Ashley James (Round Rock, Texas) tallied 10 rebounds and eight points for Campbell. A five-rebound performance was registered by senior forward Roslyn Presley (Petersburg, Va.), who contributed four points.

A total of 16 assists were registered by Campbell led by Gaines with five and four each by D Brown and sophomore guard RaeChaun Edwards (Spring Grove, Va.).

Jennifer Rhodes poured in 14 points off the bench for the Phoenix. Seven rebounds and five assists were credited to Kelsey Harris.

Elon came out firing on all cylinders offensively, but Campbell made four of its first five jumpers to take a 9-8 lead. The Phoenix press forced Campbell into a number of early turnovers

Ten miscues for Campbell enabled for the Phoenix to take a 24-14 advantage with 7:29 left.

A 12-0 response by the Lady Camels rallied them into the lead at 26-24 with 2:03 remaining. Elon took the lead just before the half as Autumn Carter made a layup and the foul shot.

The half ended as Gaines made a free throw to knot the score at 27. Elon tallied 16 points off of 13 Campbell turnovers, while holding a 16-12 advantage in the paint.

The transistion game for the Lady Camels aided them to three-straight fast-break layups to take a 43-41 advantage with just over 10 minutes left. There were eight ties and 13 lead changes during the game. 

Freshman forward Amanda Coffer (Summerville, N.C.) took the court against her sister Sam Coffer, a junior forward for the Phoenix, who fnished with two points.

After a seven-day break, the Lady Camels resume Big South play on Dec. 28 against preseason-favorite Liberty at 2 p.m. Campbell battles at Longwood on Dec. 30. The New Year opens at Gore Arena/John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center against High Point on Jan. 4 at 1 p.m.
